Just got a captivate today and need to root it and add Froyo up and running. I am running Windows XP. When I turn on the mass storage mode along with the USB debugging nothing happens when I plug the phone in. I went into "Mount" which still did not pull anything up, I have installed the Samsung driver as well. I'm out of ideas.

All you should need to do is have debugging on and plug in the phone - don't mount. Try different USB ports if it isn't recognizing your phone.

I did this and was able to get all the way into download mode, but now when it's in download mode it says device malfunction and does not recognize the device.

Did you make sure you have the USB drivers properly installed on your computer? There is also a Z4 root that you can do just by installing the app to your phone. You don't necessarily need to use the computer.

Sure is! First install ClockworkMod Recovery if you haven't already and backup your system. Then download the ROM zip file to your phone, place it on the root of the SD card and flash using Clockwork.

So when I power the phone on it goes to the at&t load screen then blacks out and the 4 keys at the bottom light up and the screen stays black, I have to pull the battery out to power the phone off.
