Captivate Turns Off on its own, PLEASE HELP!

I went to the att store and they sent me to there warranty center. The guy did a software reset? By pressing the power and volume buttons to clear the cache. He then had a battery be sent to my home to see if it is a battery issue, if anything he said I would have a free spare battery. He said if it happens then come back to get a replacement shipped. I got thee phone from amazon too.

So far, there isn't issue with a new battery? Maybe it is the battery that is causing the problem?

@Subway- It would be nice if it was the battery, but I'm thinking its more. My tele worked perfect UNTIL the baseband update that Samsung/AT&T pushed 3-4 weeks ago. (or was it longer than that??) Now it shuts down at least every couple of days, several times, and this last weekend it shut down 5 times on Sunday AND once while I was on a call.

Looks like I need to take it back to AT&T, hopefully without having to deal with a bunch of their testing, and then battery replacements... just a phone replacement! I compare this upcoming trip to AT&T, like going to the dentist!

Yep agreed, I think its a little bit more then a battery issue as well... I just ended up hard resetting mine, worked perfectly for about 3 days, then day 4 shut down once, and so far so good... Does anyone think It could be a specific app or something that could kinda push it to do this?

Dan

It sounds like there are 2 different "powered off" problems. One is completely random, and the other after sitting overnight while charging (mine). Just got mine back from Samsung for a 2nd time. First time they just did a reset even after I told them I reset it several times AND I tried swapping the battery and charger with our other Captivate (which is not having any problems!) Problem still happened. This 2nd time they flashed the JH7 version and sent a new battery and charger (already proven not to be the problem). Have only had it back for one day now. The other phone is still running on my original battery.

With the number of people having problems, I'm guessing it's software related; constant reoccurring hardware problems are easy to find (from experience, I can t/s & repair to component level). The Li-Ion battery has circuitry in it to stop the recharging cycle when it is complete. The phone recognizes when this happens and displays 100% charge. Is it "turning off" the phone when it sees the charging cycle is "turning off"? I am going to try to charge it to different levels to see if it helps.

For those wondering about apps, mine has been stock since day one except for adding Ringdroid. AND, Samsung repair center techs, I'm guessing, are not software engineers, they just throw parts at the problem or send out replacement phones. Probably why I haven't seen anywhere that somebody has actually had the problem corrected permanantly.

-sorry for the long rant but I'm as frustrated as everyone else-

hmmm, so how bout this, anyone on unofficial android 2.2 having any problems with the phone shutting off?

According to another forum, yes. It seems like when someone thinks the problem is corrected, it shows up a few days later. 2.2 seems like it addresses a couple of issues. I don't know if it is a completely new, 100% fresh program.

Mine. It was shutting down on stock 2.1 when left sitting idle all night. When I flashed to Cognition 2.2 it started having random shutdowns through the day.

Called and AT&T shipped out a replacement and got it the next day. Put Cognition 2.2 back on there and it's having the same problems. I'm going to use Odin3 to put it back to stock and see what happens.

Since I have 11 months left on my warranty, if it happens with this device after running stock, then I'll request a 3rd. If that has issues, I'll just deal until another Android device comes out on AT&T that has similar specs. Techs on the phone and the salesman in the store told me that 3 new Android devices are set to come out in November for AT&T.

Since some are having the shutdown issues and some are not, I'd say it's not a software issue or everyone would be having the issue. Over at XDA forums, they have concluded that it's a hardware issue. The tech over the phone agreed that it was a hardware issue and not a software issue. He did indicate that he knew there were a few issues with shutdowns but the majority of Captivate users are not having this issue or are not reporting it.

Well bought it online from wirefire, for 100 bucks. So the option of taking it back to the AT&T store is really not available, that's why I was considering calling Samsung and getting a warrenty replacement. I like the phone, it is sweet, don't really wanna get rid of it or sell it on ebay! Its just got this problem of being a little narco-sleepy. Other then that the phone kicks ***, and I would like to keep it.

So if anyone has any other suggestions out there please let me know, I know I cant be the only one out there with a narcoleptic phone.

Thanks, Dan
If you are still within 30 days, you can get a replacement from wirefly! I got an RMA from them at about 25-26 days!!! It took about a week after I sent it in to get a BRAND NEW replacement. :)
I'm on week 3 or so on the NEW phone without any issues... My wife's Cap has NEVER had this problem though.

Not necessarily true. I can install a half a dozen Honeywell controllers at a facility and every once in a while one will randomly have problems. Reflashing an ORIGINAL FACTORY OS has always corrected the problem (nice to have Honeywell's full software support). When a factory flashes a million chipsets, some are bound to have issues.

Not saying one way or another in regards to it being a software issue or a hardware issue, but hardware problems are the easiest to diagnose.

If mine still has issues in the next couple of days, I'll go for a replacement phone next.

Keep us posted. . . . While mine hasn't turned off for two days since I got it back with the JH7 version, I don't have much faith in it (it would usually turn off by the morning every two or three days). So I'll see how it goes in the next few days.

Is anyone running into any problems using 2.2b8?

Samsung is harder to deal with than att. They told me to send the phone in for repair and they should get it back to me in a week. I didn't believe them when they said they hadn't heard about the charging problems, overheating, and short battery life.
What good is a phone you can't use all day. My old eternity lasted five days.

Still haven't had a shutdown. I did put the Captivate Keep Alive app (from the Market) on there today to have reassurance.

Hopefully all goes well. What does make me leery is that when I got my Captivate originally it lasted 3 weeks before having shut down issues. I'd really hate to keep replacing this phone as I really like it. And it becomes a pain to keep having to redo the screens and etc

Okay the battery swap did not work, do I went back to the center and they decided to rma it with little fuss. So I will be getting an exchange. It doesn't shut down when I plug in the usb.

Keep Alive app looks interesting but it's too new on the market for me to try... Although it'll show the sheer genius of the aftermarket developers if it actually does prevent the phone from shutting down while sitting idle after a full charge (and make you wonder what dark area the Samsung engineers' heads are in for not seeing an issue-unless it's purely sales driven and Mom Samsung says not to worry about it because of how fast new models come out).

On that same premise, I charged mine for the first time since getting it back, but unplugged it before it hit fully charged (about 90%). It's hasn't shut off yet and it's been almost 4 days. I'll do the same over the next few days. If it doesn't shut off after doing a couple of "short charges" I'll have to fully charge it a couple of times to see if the newly flashed JH7 was the fix or if short charging it fixed the problem. My guess is I'll be trying the Keep Alive app next week. -My phone also developed the problem 3 weeks from new, wife's is still running fine with my original battery that I swapped with it after I first started having shut downs and tech support said to try a new battery (yea, right...)

Well, no shutdowns at all. But my original Captivate as mentioned before and like yours didn't shut down for the 3 weeks. Mine didn't have any benchmarks with shut down issues like a certain percentage of battery charge or under/over a certain percentage of battery charge or certain apps or etc.

When I spoke with the tech, I just told him I'd already been on the various Android forums and tried every fix including putting different batteries in and nothing helped.

What a stupid problem for a great phone.

I have had my phone for 2 weeks and i have been having the "idle shutdown" problem for the last week. The only way i can keep it from turning off over night is to leave it plugged into the charger all night. The problem is getting worse and it has turned off 3 times in the past 24 hours (each time after being left idle for 15 minutes or longer). I am heading to the at&t store where i bought the phone (which happens to have a warranty center right next door) right now to see if they can fix this issue and a couple other issues I'm having with the phone. I will let you guys know if they can give me any straight answer on what caused the problem or how to fix it.
