Car Charging Problem

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this but after the Fryo update my HTC car charger is no long replenishing the battery when using navigation. At this point the battery appears to actually drain very very slowly. This was not a problem before updating, this charger is identical to the HTC wall charger (.5v 1000mAh).

Has anyone else experienced this? Its a pretty big problem for me since my car is practically my office.

I recently replaced my original battery with the seidio 1700mah and i am using battery time lite to monitor the charge. as for overheating i'm using a car mount that attaches to the vents, so it stays very cool for the ac. When i am not using the nav system it begins to charge again (its possible that it is charging slower than before, i never timed it before the upgrade so i have no baseline) but when the nav is on it starts to deplete the charge.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. If fryo draws that much power then i think htc is gonna owe me a new beefier charger!

Hmmm, I thought it was just me! I have rooted 2.2 with 2.5.2 skyraider sense. I notice that when I am navigating in the car, the orange charge light is on, but it appears to be running the battery down anyway (although much more slowly than if not plugged in.) I wonder if it is not pulling enough juice for some reason?

Not a 2.2 issue

This is related to the car charger, not Froyo.

I use nav extensively and have been sense I got the phone in May.

Here's what I experience...

1. If I'm using Nav with the screen on, then the phone always discharges faster than it charges, which means that within a couple of hours it gets real hot, stops charging and eventually dies.

2. If I'm using Nav and keep the screen off (just listening to instructions) most of the time, in other words, only turn the screen on when absolutely necessary, then the phone charges up just fine, doesn't get hot, only stops charging at 100% and never dies.

This happens because you're not using a "Rapid Charger" that is specifically designed to look like and AC charger to your phone. The Rapid Chargers are shorting 2 of the wires in the USB cable with a 200 ohm resistor. That fools the phone into thinking that it's an AC charger and the phone consumes all 1000 mAh. Without the shorting, even if the charger puts out 1000 mAh, the phone assumes it's a USB connection (computer) and only consumes 500 mAh.

You can verify this by going into Settings -> About Phone -> Battery and seeing what it says under Battery status. If it says "Charging (USB)" then it's trickle charging.

I've tried several after market 1000 mAh chargers and haven't found a magic bullet yet. I'm considering biting the bullet and spending the cash on the one at Verizon.

Very well said Liquid! Most people don't realize that the off brand chargers are not good for their phones.

Just want to set everyone straight here...as i said in my original post i am using a HTC brand car charger with identical specs as the HTC ac wall charger. It is not a trickle charger. I verified this in the battery menu when plugged in it displays AC not usb.

No disrespect but you are incorrect, this is a froyo issue or it is a problem with Sense on 2.2. I use nav almost every day and i know that prior to the update the charger could run nav with the screen on and BT connected and it would replenish the battery quickly. Now under the same usage it seems to discharge slowly, but it will not recharge.

There is more to this than just the charger.
