This is related to the car charger, not Froyo.
I use nav extensively and have been sense I got the phone in May.
Here's what I experience...
1. If I'm using Nav with the screen on, then the phone always discharges faster than it charges, which means that within a couple of hours it gets real hot, stops charging and eventually dies.
2. If I'm using Nav and keep the screen off (just listening to instructions) most of the time, in other words, only turn the screen on when absolutely necessary, then the phone charges up just fine, doesn't get hot, only stops charging at 100% and never dies.
This happens because you're not using a "Rapid Charger" that is specifically designed to look like and AC charger to your phone. The Rapid Chargers are shorting 2 of the wires in the USB cable with a 200 ohm resistor. That fools the phone into thinking that it's an AC charger and the phone consumes all 1000 mAh. Without the shorting, even if the charger puts out 1000 mAh, the phone assumes it's a USB connection (computer) and only consumes 500 mAh.
You can verify this by going into Settings -> About Phone -> Battery and seeing what it says under Battery status. If it says "Charging (USB)" then it's trickle charging.
I've tried several after market 1000 mAh chargers and haven't found a magic bullet yet. I'm considering biting the bullet and spending the cash on the one at Verizon.
