Car mode comes on by itself

Hey guys, I got a problem.
Whenever in driving in the car, car mode comes on by itself all the time now.
It never used to do this, it started happening maybe 2 weeks ago.

If I close the app via multi window closing, it will come back again.
But if I just exit out of it (without closing the window) it won't come back again, probably because it's still running in the background.

But it's really annoying it will come up and sometimes I won't be able to switch back to maps or dialer.

Needless to say, I don't like the car mode.
How do I stop it from starting itself when I'm driving? It never did this before.

I'm on verizon, 4.4.4

Are you plugged in and charging when this happens? My wife has a generic cable in her car and it doesn't fit very well. Sometimes if i manipulate the connection I get the same thing. The faulty connection mimics the car dock. I literally threw it away the other day because it was making me mental.

Yes I am, so it is possibly the connection then

And no my Bluetooth is off, it just connects by itself, driving me nuts

Also, I tried disabling the app, but unable to do so because it won't allow me to. The option is grayed out
