And that's what I'm wanting to do we're getting unlocked and use my current Sim except it's not in an unlocked already it's in a Verizon phone. I know nothing about it.

Yes we are getting unlocked that's why I asked if we can take the SIM out if our 22U which is Verizon phone and put it in unlocked without getting charged. I just remember back in the day somebody used to have a bring your own device and you didn't get charged when we had our S10 plus unlocked I think it was Sprint maybe.

Yes, if you get an unlocked phone do not use the included sim card in the unlocked phone if it has one. Just put the SIM card you have currently in it and there's no activation charge.

I did that last year. Traded in my S21 Verizon phone for an S22 Ultra unlocked. Just popped out my sim and never was charged an activation fee.

Yeah u should just be able to pop the sim card in new device but TMO been cracking down on sim swap so if you don't get service then call them .

I've swapped my sims on ATT from a ATT branded S10 to a S20 unlocked, S21 unlocked, and S22 unlocked and never had a activation fee. However, when I was really testing out the S10 vs S20 and swapping the sim back and forth many times in one day the system did lock my sim out of one of the devices and I had to call them to get the lock removed after explaining that I was just testing phones. Sometimes I will even swap my sim back to my S7 so that I can use my data to download firmware updates since for whatever reason they block firmware updates over data (but somehow video streaming 24/7 is fine lol) Activation fee is a BS fee where they like to get money out of thin air for doing nothing IMO.

I had no idea. I haven't swapped my TMo SIMs since August, but as I rotate my phones, I expect to, soon. This bugs me, considering TMo is like the daddy of BYO phone. I swear if they try to sell me something should I need to call them, I will go full crazy on them.

maybe it's ok now since they implemented a setting you can enable in your account for swim swap scam so we shall find out soon

I just went into my account and saw an option to Change my SIM but when I click on it, it says I need to call them to change the SIM. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Upgrading from a carrier phone is a lot harder to do than from an unlocked phone. You will have to pay off the remaining balance of the phone and will lose the rest of the bill credits. If you finance through Samsung, you can upgrade anytime as long as you have the available credit. I traded in my S22+ to Google and am still paying Samsung for it even though I have a Pixel 7 Pro. My monthly payment over 24 months to Google is $10/month. So I'm essentially paying $1249 for my 7 Pro because my S22+ was $1000. But I also have a Tab S8 I could sell, pay off and have extra left over to pay down the remaining balance. I'm not ready to give up my Tab though. I try to pay a little extra each month to Samsung though.

Samsung financing isn't tied to the phone. It's just like a credit card account. Obviously it doesn't always make sense to do it the way I did it, but I wanted out of the S22+ and I couldn't have done it if I had financed it through Verizon.

If I were ever content to stay on either Android or iOS, or wanted to keep my phones longer, I'd probably buy from the carrier. I'm not sure though if Google financing is the same as Samsung financing. I think the account is tied to the phone and IMEI. So I think I'd have to pay it off before listing it for sale.

Again, carrier phones can't be sold or traded in until they are paid off.

I asked ATT about the activation fee & found out it has been renamed an upgrade fee. The girl I spoke with said they were cracking down on that & she personally was in "employee jail" for waiving the fee's recently. Maybe need to find someone in customer retention if that still exists?

I went from an ATT S10 to an Unlocked S20Ultra and just swapped my sim over with no fuss and in fact, I frequently swap my sim over to my ATT S7 from unlocked phones so that I can hotspot and download firmware updates over my data where they normally block it. I have swapped my sim from a unlocked phone to carrier (ATT) multiple times this year without fuss..
