Carrier to Prepaid phone SIM card swap

just wondering, If i were to want a new phone but still be under contract, could I buy a prepaid phone and switch the SIM cards? Would this work? would I only be able to do it between GSM phones and would the prepaid phone need to be from a company that shares the same network? (like sprint and virgin mobile)

The new phone would have to be unlocked in order for u to do something like that.
