Cases for the Nexus 6P

After reading every post I think, I decided on the Red Shield (smoke) Slim & Flexible TPU version, and also the Ringke Fusion (clear). Trying to keep it slim enough to avoid making this big phone unwieldy, but enough protection for occasional drops, and hopefully side grip. Supposed to arrive next week so I will try and update after using each.

So I finally got both cases in and here's my nickel review. As noted, my goal was for a clear-ish case, not too thick, and good grip. First, the Ringke Fusion, Crystal view. I really like the clear, and shows off the aluminum style of the phone. An added bonus I've noticed is that if I set the phone down on its back, the sides make it easy to find if I'm looking for the phone later (unlike a dark or smoke cover (see below)). I will admit that the clear does show more fingerprints, but it's not as if the smoke doesn't show any, the smoke just does a better job at hiding a few of them. To me, this issue is not a deal breaker one way or the other, as I'm sure I'll be wiping the front and back of my phone often. The Ringke also has good solid corners which doesn't seem to add to the girth too much and the back feels really solid, again without adding too much depth. I also like the hingeable cap on top for the headphone jack. Another point in comparison to the Redshield is that the side buttons are set up like the phone. In other words, one size button for the power, and one large button for the volume rocker. My biggest complaint with this particular case is that it doesn't get grippy on the back. And the sides, while it is much better than stock, could stand to use a little more grip in comparison to the Red Shield.

Which leads me to the Red Shield, Smoke TPU case. Starting with what I like. I tried both cases for a while back to back. To be sure, I asked my wife her honest opinion, based on feel alone, and we both agreed that the Red Shield has just the right amount of grippiness to it. I felt like I would have less chance of dropping the phone with that case over the Ringke. Both cases had smooth backs, but the Red Shield felt just a teeny bit more tacky. On the negative side, compared to the Ringke, this felt slightly less "solid." I feel like the Ringke will last several years, and this one not quite as long. Of course, one advantage with the smoke color is fingerprints and potential scratches should be less noticeable. As noted above, one difference also is that the volume has two buttons. Some may prefer the feel of two volume buttons, while others may prefer the feel of the different size buttons just so you can feel the difference when not looking. I'm just barely on the side of the former, but it would not be a deal breaker. My biggest negative with the Red Shield is the smoke color. It is much darker than advertised. While I can see the NEXUS logo on the back without a problem, it is much darker than I expected, and certainly much darker than the online Amazon photos. I was wanting to order a clear when I got this but it wasn't available then (it is now).

Verdict: Slight edge to the Ringke (for now). Its looks and solid build outweigh its ever so slight more slippery feel (Mind you, I'm not saying it's slippery, just more than the Red Shield). [I should probably note that I have Nexus protect which also gives me a little more personal reassurance which may allow me to take more chance on the Ringke]. Further, both cases are equal when it comes to adding size which was a big concern for me, and I don't feel like either added anything significant. In fact, with the case, I feel much more at ease using this large phone. It is possible that I may exchange the smoke for the clear Red Shield which seems to be back in stock, but based on the two choices I have as of today, I'll use the Ringke for now.

I have three different clear cases for my 6P -- the RedShield Clear, the Adopted from Google, and the Spigen Clear Ultra Hybrid -- and the Adopted is my least favorite. It does have a decent feel but I don't care for the frosted finish and it is the most difficult to put on/remove (though doesn't seem to fit any better). Also, the buttons are the stiffest.

My runner up, that I like a lot, is the RedShield clear case. It feels good in the hand, you see the phone though the case, and is fairly thin. This case, like the Adopted, is entirely made of TPU. This case probably has the best "button feel" of the three cases, at least in part because it seems to be the thinnest case.

My favorite, so far, is the Spigen Clear Ultra Hybrid case. I feel having the poly-carbonate back helps provide a little extra protection, plus the corners of the case appear to be engineered to better protect the corners of the phone. I also like that the black bar on the back is not covered, but still has enough of a lip to protect the glass on back when you set the phone down or if you should drop it. Also, like the RedShield, being a clear case it really shows off the good looks of the phone.

OK this is funny I ordered the Spigen rugged armour case on 11/13 about 4 days after i ordered my 6P. I checked status Amazon it was backordered/ out of stock and the finally yesterday i got a processing notification.. well today it says shipped arrival date of Monday Nov 30th. so i received my Nexus 6 P on 11/18. after seeing my case delayed not to arrive until 11/30, i decided to order another one free 2 day shipping it will arrive Tuesday and with credits i got it for $5.81.

So once i get it I am going to call Amazon and return the one i originally ordered ...

Wow, that's crazy. I just ordered the Spigen Rugged Armor case just this past Thurs via Amazon and was delivered next-day via Amazon Prime shipping. LOL...Prime is the schiznit! :)

well my original order of the Spigen was when it was out of stock so i expected delay as my phone wasnt expected to arrive until the 24th.. then Amazon showed the same case in stock, and with e placing order later yesterday i am still happy getting it on Tuesday..i have my phone in a microfiber sunglass bag to protect it from scratches...... until case comes...

Thank you for that. There was a discussion about this very thing somewhere, and most people agreed that the back of the phone shouldn't matter much if at all. It's the sides you need to grip to hold onto. If you are holding onto the back, you would need to be pinching the the screen and the back of the phone. Makes no sense. As long as the sides of the phone/case are grippy, it's all good.

Even if you did 'palm' the back of the phone, your fingers should wrap around one side and provide grip. Maybe he holds the phone much differently than most people.
Honestly, I don't see the need for grippy sides. Grip=friction, and when you're holding it by the sides, you have opposition (squeezing force) and don't need much friction. Most people can hold on to an ice cube with a thumb and one finger as long as they have opposition. It's when you try to hold it with only friction (thumb on one side, finger on an adjacent side) that you drop it.

That said, I would need to see a picture to believe that any (non-giant) human being could hold the Nexus 6P and still maintain opposition (i.e. by only the sides) while reaching to the far edge of the screen with the thumb of the same hand. I can't even come close.

For non-giants, to reach the left edge/corners of the screen (assuming right-handed use), the fingers have to leave the left edge and slide onto the back. When this happens, you lose opposition altogether, and only the grippiness of the back keeps it from sliding off your fingers. It's not a squeeze between the back and front at all, rather it's friction between the back and your fingers.

The same thing is true when the phone is resting on a table, on the console in your car, on your pants leg, or on any other surface. If the back is slippery, the phone will move around; if it's not, it'll stay put.

On a side note, anyone agitated with the placement of the power/volume buttons right smack in the middle of the phone? Would much rather them placed higher on the side.
Yes! This is probably my only complaint about the phone. I'm not sure why they put them right where your hand rests when holding the phone, rather than up and out of the way.

Re: This nexus 6p case!!

Haven't seen them elsewhere but one reviewer described the back as a "carpet" 😊

Re: This nexus 6p case!!

Just have to get lucky. I checked that page multiple times a day and finally caught it in stock for about 30 minutes the other day .. got my order in :).

That case looks amazing omg I want to get both cases !

Is it like sandpaper? How is the grip while using it one-handed?

I would compare the feel to the OnePlus One and the cases that were developed in it's wake. I think the texture enhances one handed use of the 6P. It's not a "sticky" feel at all. A very minimal case that protects the back....

Nexus 6P Case Thin Fit – Spigen Inc.

I saw the video review of the Spigen Thin Fit case a couple days after I had already order mine from Spigen's website. After watching the video I was not too sure I ordered the right case. I could not have been more wrong to think that.

My review: When I opened the packaging my first thought was this is really thin. It's not a soft feeling case... it's a hard plastic, but it's not a slick feel. It fits very, very nicely on my 6P. To remove it, it takes some effort. I found if I start removing it from the upper left corner then down the left side it is the easiest way to remove it, and putting it back on it feels just as tight. The lip coming over the edge of the screen it small, but large enough to protect the screen when I lay it face down. I can plug in the charger or headphones in with out any issues.

Since I have only had the case about 24 hours now, I'm very impressed with the case. It feels really good in the pocket of my jeans, as well as in my workout shorts in the gym listening to music with my headphones.

I've owned several Spigen Thin Fit cases. They are in my opinion the absolute best thin fit cases out there. They have kind of a soft touch texture. They aren't going to protect your phone if someone chucks it against a wall but it's perfect for every day bumps and bangs. Honestly I won't buy any other kind of thin case. I got mine for the 6P on Friday and I love it.
