Casting continues while phone restarts!

Hi All,

I was casting from an app (Rogers Ignite TV) to the Firestick plugged into my TV.

I restarted my S20+ 5G (running Android 11) while the app was still Casting and the phone restarted as expected.

What I didn't expect was that the casting continued and never missed a beat through the restarting and continued when I logged in again.

I would always thought restarting shuts down any running apps.

Is this normal behaviour?

Depends on the app. 'Casting' to a Firestick isn't necessarily mirroring and definitely not the same protocol as 'Casting' to a Chromecast. If the app you're using just hands off the video playback to the Firestick app (like ChannelsDVR or, if I recall correctly, Disney+), then the phone app is not doing anything anymore (if you open the app it might connect to act as a remote, but the whole playback process is being taken over by the full Firestick app).

I have to correct myself. I have Firestick, Roku and Chromecast connected to my (Samsung) TV.

Any Casts go to the Chromecast.

That's because when you cast to Chromecast the phone essentially acts as a remote and the Chromecast itself is streaming the media.

My guess is that if you switched to casting to the Roku the phone restarting would interrupt the cast because in that case the phone is handling playback and sharing it's screen via casting. Same with the Firestick.

There are differences in casting technology.
