Cease and Desist

I wonder if it has anything to do with your rooting utility? I don't really see why it would, but the reason I think it may is the date you posted it is the same date the C&D letter was written. I agree that it coming via regular mail does seem very odd.

Wow. Interesting situation. Seems like a well thought out prank. Orrrrr...., mycleanpc.com spyware on your computer allowed them to see what you were doing and they wanted to do it for some personal gain? (A far stretch and I'm still not able to justify why it would be beneficial for them to do this, but I don't know why people do a lot of things...)

My guess on the situation would be that it's definitely odd that they were able to pick out a guy that had a rooted phone (my guess is they weren't going against odds here, and actually had good evidence). I've learned recently that some websites could tell whether or not you were running Cyanogenmod and there was a big scenario on that. But yeah, get in contact with your legal people to make sure that you're not dealing with anything huge here. I would leave this in Drew's hands, as he seems pretty interested and knowledgeful on the subject.

I doubt website code detecting if he is running Cyanogen or anything was used. My guess is they got their info from an online forum like this one. Plus it makes it easy since his full name, facebook, city, and state are all in his profile. Now whether it is legit or not I have no idea, but a phone call to the law office would clear that up pretty quick. And if it is legit, I wouldn't say anything until you talk to a lawyer.

Wouldnt it be sweet if our firewalls could sprout forth and produce a double barrel shotgun and shoot the face off anyone invadeing our privacy?

Couldnt a website ping our devices then calculate our current cpu speed
(Roughly) then check it against our devices id (like what market/play does for app compatability) optimus s is 600mhz so why 748mhz there by deduceing custom rom i.e cyanogenmod and your downloading source code.................propaganda scare tactic......spread the word to your fellow nerds......and here we are.... thats why no certified prob 3rd party put up to it on the down low for some$$......thats my guess my wife is a lawyer she says "they do that kinda stuff"

You can't get a device's unique ID or CPU info from a web page, unless your browser is using some nefarious plugin.

since it wasnt certified ignore it. if you get one certified call a lawyer
then sue for invasion of privacy

Good luck
may freedom fly you to still waters of peace

Not sure about device id however it is possable to ding a device over and over subtract response time lag and calculate response time and roughly deduce cpu speed <------i said that wrong but you know what i mean ;) remember that old virus it pings your comp to a dead crawl

It's not "invasion of privacy" if your info is publicly available. Hell I just posted my full, unredacted resume on Google+ for all the world to see.

At best it's a minor annoyance, at worst unwarranted harassment.

Thats a true and valid view point. but let us bow our heads and remember the old lady that spilled hot coffee on herself at mc'ds and won 18 million....it just goes to show anyone can make a mountain out of a mole hill.......*ahem* the whole buisness of google/java
but to be fair how much code are they complaing about?
and whats your opinion on it? I personaly dont see what the big deal is i thought the pride of oracle was java was embedded in everything why should android be any different?

Looks pretty damn fake to me. Obviously I'm no expert, but IMO, if these guys were really representing Google, you would be able to easily tell that it's legit. The way it's written just screams "TROLL"...and it's not even signed.....I don't know.

I know isnt that the weirdest thing but if it is fake .....why?....whats the point?

Why does everyone keep saying "TROLL"?
im not familiar with this term
;)...its not my breath is it?

There are a growing number of dubious "law offices" who send C & D letters for unsubstantiated/unproven/bull**** piracy claims in hope of getting every greedy law student's dream,

THE CA$H $ETTLEMENT

I'm guessing they've stopped easily wringing the dollars from grannies who know nothing about bittorrent, and are moving on to target Android enthusiasts on "copyright infringement" claims.

If you search torrentfreak or any other torrent-related news site, you'll see plenty of items about law firms harassing innocent individuals, sometimes without the benefit of even being hired by the alleged plaintiff of the suit.

Sure looks to be what's happening here.

That said, larger law firms DO shop routine work out to smaller, associated firms now and then. Seeing an attorney in the appropriate field who will give you a free consult will only cost you time. Contacting the EFF would also likely put you in touch with several people eager to hop all over this.

I see ....i stand by my earler post about firewalls and shotguns

A real Cease and Desist letter will be on law office stationary, and in a standard format. This had neither.
