cell radio problems and Verizon's "fix"

Been having connection problems with my thunderbolt for a while now. Can be sitting at home in the recliner and it will switch from 4g to 3g to 1x. The handover back up to 4g takes forever and will stay back at 4g. This also happens when outside in strong 4g areas so i don't think it is a signal issue. Took it in to the corporate Verizon store twice. Tech service told me to clear the browser cache the first time. This time they want to send me a new battery cause mine feels mushy and this can lead to connection issues, supposedly. Anyone else had this problem and been offered this "solution"? This is my second replacement device already and they don't seem to want to send me another one to fix what I consider to be a major issue.

Two things...

Are you sure they didn't say the battery door seems "mushy". Never heard of a mushy battery. Anyway, the antennas for the phone are located inside the battery door. If it doesn't make a really good fit, connectivity will suffer. Check to make sure your battery door is tightly "clicked in" all around each edge. Lay it face down on a flat surface and push down on all the edges hard with your thumbs.

Have you tried/experimented with any of the traditional 3G/4G software setting "fixes"? If so, which ones? What are you set at now? Or would you like some advice on that?

I was having signal issues too. But I think it was because I was just outside a 4G area. Based on another thread suggestion, I switched my network mode from Lte/CDMA to CDMA only. After a reboot, it's been pretty good.

Hope this helps...

FrankXS,

I am sure she said the battery itself. They checked the battery door, and it was tightly closed. Got the new battery today. When I installed it, i also removed and reinserted the 4G sim card. Not sure which did it, but my connection problem doesn't seem to be a problem (was on 3G all morning and went directly to 4G after the new battery with the phone in the exact same place). Will give it a couple of days prior to deciding if this truly solved the problem.

What are some of the software fixes? I have it set to LTE/CDMA right now. When the signal was switching alot, I would take it in and out of airplane mode. That helped sometimes but not always.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm glad you're all set now. Maybe they meant the battery had a bulge in it (a sign of past overheating which can ruin a battery).

As for some other fixes, ironically, one of them is to remove the battery AND SIM CARD for 2 or 3 minutes, replace and retry. Oddly enough, you did both when you replaced your battery. :)
