I am considering purchasing a cell phone signal booster from either Wilson or WeBoost (a firm that acquired Wilson.

Recent online reviews rate the Wilson device as better.

While signal is pretty strong and consistent in my immediate vicinity, work trips take me on Southern NJ routes where calls drop and signal indicator bars vanish.

Can any fellow members of this forum kindly offer their opinions/experiences concerning boosters? I am looking at the 4G model for a single handset - it requires placing our beloved V20 in the provided cradle and routing a small antenna to the vehicle's roof.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa and A Partridge in a Pear Tree!

Thanks,

Fred

Hi Fred,

I used one in my home many years ago and it was more problems than it was worth. (it was a Wilson and it was Pre-4g) Ended up going first with a Sprint provided femtocell which hooked up to my DSL broadband and it worked marginally better. After switching to Verizon years later I still had issues with signal strength in my home and they set me up with a newer mini-cell that also hooked up to my broadband - now 100 mbit fiber and it works much better for calls but not for data. A lot of my signal issues in my house seem to have to do with its construction because I get great signal outside but terrible inside.

In any event, after experimenting with the wilson and its external antenna placement, I just couldn't get it to re broadcast a reliable enough signal inside my home.

I've used one of Wilson's antennas years and years ago with great success. I can't speak for the current models, but they used to be THE brand for truckers like me and travelers in general for getting better signal.

It is not an issue in his house, it's an issue when he is in So Jersey where there are limited towers.

BTW, I am an avid Verizon user and when I was delivering vehicles from No Jersey to So Jersey I never had any major issues. I do know that one of my co drivers had T-Mobile and his service was very bad once outside the No Jersey area. PA was very bad for him. He finally dropped T-Mobile and changed over to Verizon and is very satisfied.

Weird. When I was in NJ last year and PA I had LTE just fine all around the area with T-Mobile.

It depends on the area I guess. The bigger cities have better coverage and the less populated areas have less.

Well .. Yeah :P. T-Mobile is known as a Metro carrier. That one isn't a secret.

UPDATE:

I purchased both the Wilson and WeBoost units. I drove, twice, along the portions of Rt. 539 in Ocean and Monmouth Counties (New Jersey) where calls were dropping - I am on Verizon, BTW.

I made calls both with and without the booster. When in the cradle, no calls dropped. The Wilson and the WeBoost gave me two bars here, heretofore, I had zero - especially as I drove the road where it enters the Ft. Dix/McGuire AFB property.

When I removed power from either booster, zero bars and calls dropped.

I am keeping the WeBoost. While both units gave the same signal improvement, the WeBoost affords a more secure mount via the gooseneck extension I've installed in my 2017 GMC Terrain Denali.

Thank to everyone who was kind enough to reply.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Happy Kwanzaa!

I've been using the ATT home femtocell for a while with various phones with overall good success, except with the V20. It drops calls and seems to have connection issues. Since the V20 supports wifi, I just switched to that. It's strange since the femtocell seems to work fine on the op3, HTC 10, Nexus 6P.
