I had to download an app for that. I believe that's all you can do on stock Sense. Just do a search for "battery percentage" and try out some of them.

There is a widget that has percent... long press on the screen... select widget... scroll down to settings... press that... and select the battery widget...

if you need a % there is a couple apps on the market. Vizbattery was my favorite when I needed the percentage.

I use battery indicator pro... and I love it. There a free app but I purchased to support the developer

You can root your Evo and pretty much change anything you want on it, but the process does void your warranty with Sprint and definitely can brink your phone if not done right.
