Is this possible without root? I use Google messenger app and can't stand the emojis.

Unfortunately, nope. You can use a 3rd party keyboard that supports showing different emojis or even use different images if the specific app you're using changes them (like Whatsapp or Facebook Messenger do), but that's about it.
