Change Gmail app sync settings

As most, I have gotten the new version of Gmail for my HTC One. I decided to use this instead of the native mail app, but is there a way to change the sync times? Atleast by using the native app, I have it pull every hour during the week, and on the weekend its every 3hrs. But this seems to constantly be pulling the mailbox, is there a way to change it? I'm just trying to maximize battery (Its alot better after 2 weeks of use, just fine tuning)
