Change Notification Ringtone for Google+ App???

I just want to change the Notification Ringtone for the Google+ application. I have a Nexus 5 running 4.4.2.

The option to make this change appears to be there, but when I try to choose a different sound, it never changes - it always bounces back to the default sound.

This is making me nuts. I'm sure it's something simple. Any suggestions??? And this is what Google offers - clearly, I've tried it - no dice: https://support.google.com/plus/answer/1385063?hl=en&ref_topic=1304768

Same thing happens on both, my Nexus 5 (4.4.2) and Nexus 7 2013 (4.4.2).

Complete wipe of either device makes no difference.
