The black backgrounds on the nexus 4 are driving me crazy (behind contacts, the dial pad, etc..). I'm actually about to sell the phone because of this issue. This is my last ditch effort for help. Is there anyway to change it to white (w/ black writing)? My nexus 4 came straight from google. I should mention I'm really dumb with phones, so any instructions need to be really detailed! Thanks!

I'm dumb with phones too. I wouldn't know how to change the background to white, and hopefully somebody will chime in and tell you how, but it seems to me that you could use a launcher app to customize your layout any way you want. Search for "launcher" in Google Play and the 2 most popular (and free) are the GO Launcher and Nova Launcher, but there are dozens of them. GO and Nova have paid verions too, but you should just test out a bunch of the free ones and see what you like. If you have experience with iOS or Windows 8, they even have launcher that emulate those. I should add just test out one at a time. Uninstall it before you install and text another.

You need to root your phone i think... OR, what i do is: i have apex launcher. You could download it, and change some settings there.

A surefire way to change such settings without rooting or ROMs (since that might be too complicated for you) is too install replacement apps. For the Dialer and Contacts I suggest searching the Play Store for GO Contacts EX or Contacts+

The first app mentioned gives you many theme options while the latter has black and white backgrounds to choose from. Hope this helps.

Just downloaded Go Contacts EX. Looks great, thanks.

My background in the people app and messaging app is white, it is only dark within the dialer. I actually prefer a dark background with white lettering because it uses less battery, but to each their own. I'm still curious to how you got a dark background within the stock people app. I would like that myself. Also, the messaging app if it can be made that way stock.

Not an expert here, far from it, but what I understand from reading various android sites is that this is the case only for oled/amoled screens, not for lcd/ips screens. So this wouldn't apply to the Nexus 4. Since I learnt that I've been enjoying some nice colors for my wallpaper using the color app!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to try them out. I don't even know what rooting is, so it's probably not an option for me. I've previously tried some launcher app but it only changed the main background not everything else.
