Can it be done without a LED light app? seems odd that it would need a separate app to do. Kind of a bummer that the edge notifications for messages won't work with hangouts either. Must use native messaging app.

Yes you can change LED color without the need to install any 3rd party app. Its probably deep somewhere in the settings. It also depends on the custom skin your Android is running on. Some ROMS freely allow you to change notifications even for 3rd party apps while some only allow factory apps. So have a look in settings deeply. It might be some fancy name

The setting to change led colour is normally within the notification section of the app itself.

there doesn't seem to be a led option in hangouts, or gmail......and I have looked throughout settings. any guidance on that?

The only setting I can find for the LED is in settings/sounds and notifications/led indicator (down the bottom). The problem I have with the LED is that at night when I leave the phone to charge next to my bed blue is a very intrusive colour. Although you can disable some notification settings in the "do not disturb" area I can't find a way of changing the LED behaviour. I thought on previous galaxy mobiles you could change the led behaviour as part of DND. I have mentioned this on the Samsung Mobile facebook group and they tell me it has been raised as a new feature request.

i put my phone in a black 'shocksock' so the led doesn't bother me at night. very inexpensive on amazon.
