Changing the colours on Google Messages

Hi all. Loving my Pixel 9 Pro Fold so far, but there's one minor issue thats driving me nuts. If the Google SMS messages aren't set up for RCS, I can find no way of changing the colors for the chat. I gather RCS has to be set up at BOTH ends, but if it isn't, then when you press the three little 'More' dots at the top right, then the 'Change Colors' option in the menu is not there. Which means I am stuck with a pretty crappy black and white option which looks rubbish and is quite hard to read.

Every search I've done to alter colors just directs me to that 'More' option, but in most of my contacts, the option to change colors just is not there. Its such a simple thing, I'd have thought it would be so simple to alter. Am I missing something ??

Unfortunately, yes, only RCS conversations can be changed within Google Messages. The rest would follow the system colors (which not sure if they can be changed/themed natively on a Pixel, but I would think you could?) or by modding the app with 3rd party themeing apps (that would require root, most likely).

Thanks chap. I'm not sure I'm bothered enough about it to go down the path of installing a root with 3rd party apps, and I could not find an option within the phone settings to do it. So I guess I'll just put up with it. But for such a basic option, its bizarre you can't just change the colors. Never had this issue with Samsung.
