This might seem a strange way to do this, but I would insert the card in your PC, copy paste all the files from the card to your PC, and then copy paste again to the new card. Double check everything is there and delete the old card. This does 2 things: PCs can do this faster, and it creates a backup copy of the files.

Glad you got it worked out. See you around the forums.

From a Sprint Moto X using the AC forums app.

what about formatting the new sd? is it necessary, and if yes how do I do it, and what would be the sequence of events for backup, formatting, copying?

Welcome to the forums.
If you have files on the card that you need to be kept, insert it into your PC by copy/paste. Then replace the card in your phone, and under Settings>Storage, you can reformat the card.

so just copying all the files from the smaller microSD to the larger one does work? Just checking because didn't see anyone explicitly say it worked for them. Trying this on S5. Thanks.

It'll work, although if you have apps installed to the SD card you should move them back to the phone first.

And be sure that Windows Explorer (if that's what you're using) is set to show hidden files.

Hi,
I need to put a bigger SD card into a Moto E with KitKat.
Is it still enought to
- move SD-based apps back onto the phone
- copy all files (inclusive hidden ones) from the old to the new card?

Will it work with KitKat too?
Thanks in advance

What if I don't have enough space in the internal storage to put back my apps in it from the external SD?

Strange? I have only done transfers this way since forever. Or a direct card to card with a PC in the middle.

Why would anyone do it another way is beyond me.

Strange, because I have had users question me about this method before. I agree it seems like a hassle to remove the card and place in the PC, but I have found the copy and rewrite speed is much faster, so in the long run, one is saving a lot of time by taking the few extra steps.

A while ago I bought a 32GB SD to replace my 8GB. When first inserted into my phone empty everything works fine, I can transfer files from the internal memory to the SD and the phone works more effiently because of the space.
I tried this method many, many times of copying and pasting the files backwards and forwards from SD to computer to SD and each time without fail it 'damages' the card. As soon as my old files are on the card it no longer works on my phone and my phone will not format it when I try to. I can format it on my computer though and once again when it's clear it works fine. Is there any other method or am I doing something wrong? I can't download an app as is because my phone doesn't have enough memory so would have to spend hours moving everything off it to the computer again in order to download one and then wouldn't be able to put the data anyway. I have been trying to figure this out since I bought the card early September and feel like I'm just missing something really obvious :/
Should I just try buying a different card?

I've tried this on a number of occasions. Copying Android files from an SD card to a larger SD card always fails in windows explorer. I tried cloning the cards and that fails. I tried using command prompts and xcopy and that fails. I haven't found a way to successfully transfer data from one SD card to another. I am using SanDisk Ultra's one 16 GB the other 32 GB. What should be an easy task seems impossible. I've read some had success but haven't shared the proper method they used. I wonder if it's a windows - Android thing?

Then get a new larger hard drive. Transfer the files from your old hard drive to the new hard drive, then use the new hard drive in your computer to transfer the phone files from your old Micro SD to your new Micro SD.
Simple!
Well....I'm not sure I know how to do it but I'm sure it can be done.

Never mind all that:
Take your phone with the old Micro SD card in it and the new Micro SD card into your Cell Provider's store and ask them to do it.

Don't use your phone's internal memory for the temp. storage to switch Micro SD cards.
Either use an on-line phone backup or use your computer's hard drive.
