Ready to make the trade from charge to SG3 but signal issue is making me think twice. Anyone go from Charge to SG3? I know the SG3 is better but in the end I need it to make calls and I make a ton of calls, so can anyone give a comparison between the two in regards to radio? gotta have it work well as a phone. My Charge is rooted and has very good signal strength and I live in a 4g area.

THX

I didnt get it but was interested (damn wife and her "we have to pay the bills").

A friend of mine did get it and I talked him into a day long swap the other day. I am in a very strong area for 4G and I am also a Charge veteran.

The signal wasn't that bad. I could make all the calls needed through the day, but I did have some handoffs to 3G that I didn't have with my Charge or my Rezound.

In short, the signal strength was weaker but it was still usable.

YMMV

I had the Charge for over a year and got the S III about 10 days ago. The S III is slightly weaker in 4G signal if you are in a marginal area. Not so for the phone signal as the S III makes crystal clear calls for me everywhere with no noises or dropped calls, and I use it a lot for work. My house is just on the edge of 4G and the Charge got 4G in 90% of my house and the S III in only about 10%. I never had any real problems at all with the Charge but for speed and what you can do with the S III there is no comparison. And I love that I can "suspend" the bloatware with Ice Cream Sandwich.

I had a charge for over a year. I now have the GS III and have not noticed any diference in the ability to make and receive calls.

The specs sheet and my own unscientific observations say that the Charge and the Galaxy Nexus use the same physical radios, while the S3 uses a newer radio. I did a write up on the S3 radio here.

I've had the Charge, Galaxy Nexus and the S3 on T-Mob and Verizon (It's nice being a member of the media) and I have to say that Samsung has done some nice things with the radio set in the S3. It's far from perfect, but it's much much better than the Charge and the Galaxy Nexus that I use as my daily driver.

That is because the sgs3 is SoC where the others are not. They, Samsung, still have a loooooooooog way to go with radios to catch up to htc and moto. The new tw is sucky as well compared to sense 4 and what I hear from motoblur

Had multiple charges that all kept missing calls. Do not have the same problem with gnex or s3 so something to do with the radio must be better with these two phones.

Also, the charge had the worst gps I've ever experienced on an Android phone. Gnex was okay. S3 is the best.

Having had multiple htc thunderbolts and knowing people with them, it is my observation that the gs3 has a better radio than the htc thunderbolt. Now, I also have had several htc rezound and the rezound seems to overall have a better radio, but there are times and areas where the gs3 is better based on my observations. Obviously many things impact radios, different circumstances may yield different results.

Started with a Charge that was great for me signal wise in all areas that I travel to. Then the June update hit and the phone just sucked after that. I even replaced the phone and it was no better. Upgraded to a Nexus. In less than 24 hours I had to replace the sim card because I had no signal what so ever. Two days later had to get a new Nexus and that one also sucked. I was still within the 14 day window with the Nexus, so I got the S3. While the signal strength is better, The radio still is bad. I live 3.17 miles from a tower and should not be having the 3g/4g issues that I am having. Even in a strong 4g area, I only get 3 bars at the most, which I know pay no attention to the bars, but the db values are not good.

Dumped my daughter's Charge and got her the S3.
She's in love, that is, if you can be in love with phone.

Thanks for all the replies folks. I set my charge up to ignore the last verizon update so its still going good with eclipse and i don't drop many calls. Sounds like the s3 is good enough so tomorrow I will join the crowd and get that new GS3!:D

I've never used the charge before but i've never had any issues with the S3 regarding signal wise, or anything else for that matter. I don't think you'll regret switching over to S3.

Not that it matters, but you wouldn't get the ota if you are on eclipse

I came from the Charge and have been thrilled with the GS3. The better battery life, snappy processor, larger and higher resolution screen, and the 2 GB of RAM are the real killer features for me-the phone runs very smoothly and I easily get through a day whereas even when new the Charge needed...well, a charge. Multitasking with multiple memory-intensive apps is possible with the GS3 where it wasn't with the Charge. I think you're going to be really happy with the GS3 as well!

I had the charge and its night and day. The gps actually works on the s3. I hated the charge, dev support for it was virtually non existent and it lagged so bad. Get this phone and be happy.

I know local conditions can cause variations, but my observations in my house indicate the Charge had a better radio. Got 4G 90% of the time in the house on the Charge and only about 10% of the time with the S3. The S3 averages about 5 to 10 db lower on 4G than the Charge. Doesn't seem like much, but when the Charge was -108 in the house that doesn't bode well for the S3. That being said, I'm keeping the S3 as it is far superior in all other ways, and as another poster said, the GPS in the Charge sucked. The S3 gets a position in 5 seconds or less. Also, I"m in a low signal island and Verizon has promised a tower upgrade that will make it a moot point (they have been promising the tower upgrade for a year now).
