Charging all night?

But even with overcharging protection, isn't it best for lithium batteries not to bring or keep them at 100% very often or for very long?

I have charged every single phone I have every owned overnight. I have never had any battery issues before.

Sony Xperia Z5 Compact

I'm not saying that leaving it plugged in will make it explode or melt or something. As I understand it, leaving it plugged in for extended periods does not cause the type of issue you would notice right away. Instead, it causes slow degradation to the battery which reduces its effective capacity.

This is why I use a timer whenever I plug in my phone. My 6P charges roughtly 1% per minute (I know, everyone else's charges 50% per second, right?), so it's easy to set the timer to whatever is needed to avoid it reaching 100%.

Leaving the phone plugged in does not mean it is continuously charging. If all equipment is working properly, the charger will stop charging the battery once 100% is reached and any power that is required will come from the AC.
100% is not a problem for lithium batteries, 0% is a problem.

Well, that goes against what I have read in many different places, which is that 0% and 100% are both problems. I know it's not continuously charging, but it keeps it pegged at 100% or really, really close.

I've read that type of thing in many different places over the past few years. However, I readily admit to not being an expert. Maybe this advice applies to older lithium battery technology only?

I do know that before I started avoiding charging my Li batteries to 100% all the time, my batteries (for cameras, whatever) would slowly lose their max charge capacity until it became abysmal. But that was some years ago...

I have read the same things about keeping your battery under 100% and away from 0%. However, you have to think about reality. Does anyone really think that a major phone manufacturer hasn't designed their phones to successfully handle being charged to 100% on a regular basis?

Sure, following the "keep it under 100%" rule might extend battery life a little. How do you do that in the real world without creating an inconvenient system of, for example, plugging it in maybe 2 hours before you go to bed, setting a timer and unplugging it at 90%, leaving it off the charger overnight and (with doze) losing 5-10% then using it all day but being careful not to drop below 10% etc. etc. To me, that's a little ridiculous. I just don't think you are supposed to be a slave to your phone like that.

I've left my phones on the charger overnight and they have all lasted at least 2 years without issue. I haven't kept a phone longer than that so I can't speak to how much longer you can go. I've continued the same habit with my 6P. I plug it in before I go to bed and wake up with a full tank for the day.

I'm not knocking what you said as untrue, I'm just inserting a dose of reality.

Now, that's a good post. Thank you for not proclaiming certainty and omniscience.

I'm sure the device can handle being charged to 100%, but I strongly doubt they've tried to make it do so in a way that allows the device to last several years. I think they make sure it won't start fires and cause lawsuits, and that it won't die within a year, and that's pretty much it.

I totally get it, and this is where personality types come in. I've been using timers for a couple years and yeah, it's annoying and I don't like it. But it's hard for me to get over the price tag I just ate on this thing. And how the battery is not readily replaceable. If the ******* battery was replaceable, my life would be hella easier.

With the timer I linked to above, I'm able to set it for however many minutes I want, and just leave it. It's easy to set it to get it at ~90% and stop. :)

I think I am missing that link. What is the app?

It's a timer that cuts off power to the charger after however many minutes you set it to. You just have to press the "countdown" button and then press the up/down arrows to dial in the minutes.

Ah! So let me make sure I have this straight - do you have it set up to stop after a certain time that you've generally found to get the phone to 90% and then let it discharge a bit overnight because the power has stopped flowing? So when you wake up, you have maybe 85%?

Is that what you're doing?

Yep, that's what I'm doing. I also work from home, so it's not really putting me out if I have to charge it a second time mid-day. :)

I know where you're going, and like I said, it's a personality thing. I feel better keeping the battery as healthy as I can (with the best info I can garner), as long as it's not too difficult for me to do so. Pushing a few buttons on a timer is easy enough, it makes me feel better, and it helps my battery.

Oh... no, I'm not going anywhere. I just like to understand all the options. Interesting. Yes, definitely a personality thing. And I do agree, the built in battery does press the issue. This is my first phone with a built in battery and I have to admit, I did wonder.

Where did that quote come from?
I would not even like to use lead acid and lithium ion in the same sentence.
There is nothing wrong with fully charging a lithium battery. Lithium battery life is shortened by excessive heat, continually falling to low charge levels and number of charging cycles. Once the battery hits 100% the charging cycle stops. Leaving it plugged in just switches your phone's power needs to the ac charger.
Sorry, the reference quote was to the first reply in the thread.

Yep, the laws of physics are relative. Ignore them if they're inconvenient.

Lead acid batteries do best when kept at very low charge levels as often as possible.

Water does not freeze, regardless of temperature.

That was so easy to type.
