I got my phone on Friday and was anxious to get to the car and try, once again, the underwhelming Android auto.... only to find the charging cable doesn't have a standard USB end that goes into the charger. Why why would they do that?

You could try looking for a USB-C to USB-A adapter. But that's the point of making USB-C. It's supposed to replace USB-A and -B.

USB-C to USB-C cable that comes with the phone is required to support the USB-C Power Delivery standard for fast charging. This standard isn't supported if a USB-A to USB-C cable is used.
There are plenty of deals online on USB-A to USB-C cables, I got 6 of them in various lengths for like $11 on Amazon.

Figured thanks. I'm an apple user of carplay (work phone). Anything new with Android auto and how it interacts with this phone, or is it all pretty standard?

Any recommendations on what fast chargers I should buy that will rapid charge the phone? The fast chargers I have for my Moto X Pure and Axon 7 just don't do it.

The power output of the OEM charger is 9V@3A (therefore an output of 27W). Buy any aftermarket USB-C charger that supports Power Delivery 3,0 standard. The 3.0 will allow the charger to output 9V/3A. A Power Delivery 2.0 charger will provide less output and charger slower. Here are some to consider:

FYI - Do not confuse Power Delivery 3.0 with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. They are different standards.
