Charging issues

Right now my Nexus has been plugged into the computer (work) and it's constantly discharging, and it's now at 80%. What gives? I don't have this problem with my stock cord on my PC.

It does it with:
- AC Chargers
- DC Chargers
- USB Cords
- Built in car-USB ports
- pretty much everything, except the stock USB cord/charger

What gives?! I wanted to play a game the other night, and I had it plugged in and it still drained my battery. There is NO way that multiple USB ports/cords can't charge this phone. I can't even hook it up to a USB port in the work vehicles to listen to music, because it drains my battery.

I still need to reinstall my ROM, but I'm at work ATM. Could this be rom related?

If i mess with it - browse the web, it really won't charge at all (it says charging). If I don't mess with it, it'll charge *really* slow.

The only way to charge my phone is to plug it in, and turn it off and let it charge.

It could be ROM related, no question. There are a number of power saving options built into ROMs and if something is messed up it could be using more power than it should be.

I know the Gnex, and many Samsung devices, charge way faster on the stock charger that came with the phone. If I use that charger I get about a 50% faster charge than I do from one of the older micro USB plugs i have laying around.

I also know that you don't get much in the way of juice from a USB port. I used to charge mine at work via USB but if I used the phone it really wouldn't charge at all. I started using a wall charger there and no longer have that problem.

Now my stock USB cord no longer works. I can't get it to charge my Nexus. I need to try it on my fascinate. I reinstalled the ROM Codename and it's now on 18 hours of battery and still 38%.. and it wasn't even on 100% when I took it off charge today! :D This is with usage! Hope it fixes the charging issues.

I'm still having this issue. Does anyone have the min specs for the cable/charger? This phone is a hassle to charge. I can't use it while charging. I bought an AC charger and it does the same thing.

It's really getting annoying. Now my stock cord won't even charge it anymore, but works on my fascinate?

I am trying to figure out what you are saying. Are you saying that the cable that came with your GNex with the USB and microUSB plugs on it that plugs into an A/C plug will not charge your phone while the phone is on?

If I do anything with my phone, it won't charge. It'll say charging but it'll still discharge. If I don't touch it and leave it plugged in, it'll charge. I can't use it for playing music, video, Bluetooth, anything. The battery will discharge. I bought new cords, ac chargers.. nothing. Still will discharge.

Need more info. Take shots of your battery screen with what's using it up. What settings are you on? Do you have a kernel? Which one?

Can't really help if there's nothing to diagnose from!

I'm using codename 1.40 with nothing changed, default settings.

The only thing I can think of (off the top of my head) is the charger is always reading as "USB" instead of "AC." You can outrun a USB charge (500mAH) fairly easily; AC charges at 1 amp so it's a bit harder.

Do you ever see it charging as USB even when it's plugged in?

I haven't noticed that. Im at work now so I'll check in a few hours. That battery life is also with the extended battery. I know it's never said it was connected to usb. It charges insanely fast. Like on my home ac charger, 30 minutes will bring it from 0 battery life to 70 percent quickly. I'm confused the way it works. I may go back to stock.

Interesting. Maybe you're just such a poweruser that you outrace AC AND USB?

I thought about that too. But there's no way. It does it even with extremely light use. Basically if the screen is on, WiFi , Bluetooth, music, it won't change. Might send it back.

Even when I have my GNex on full brightness in navigation mode where the screen never shuts off, I can't outrace the A/C charge my VZW car charger or the charger that came with my GNex give me.

Go back to stock. If that fixes it, then you know it is a software problem. If it doesn't fix it, then you know it is a hardware problem and the phone needs to go back.

You need to return it back to stock to return it for a warranty replacement anyhow.

Last night I did a test just to see if I could come up with something that would overwhelm the charger. I live in a 3G only area, so normally I set my network to CDMA only. Last night, I switched it to CDMA/LTE knowing that it would put a heavy load on the phone searching for a signal. Then I put songbird in shuffle play to get some music going, turned on Wifi tethering and started a d/l with my laptop AND started GPS nav to use that radio and keep the screen on full time. I started with my battery at 75% and on the AC charger, it climbed 1% every 3~4 minutes. I didn't think to test it on USB.

The stock charger can supply up to 1000 mA. A USB port only supplies a max of 500 and that might be shared with other USB devices. I read that some people that update phones every time something new comes out try to keep everything as pristine as possible so they can sell the phone on eBay to finance their upgrades. Some of these people go so far as to not unpack the stock chargers. I wonder if they are trying to use older, lower powered chargers and running into problems?

If people are using the stock charger or one with at least 1000 ma of current and having problems keeping the phone charged, something is definitely NOT working the way it is supposed to.

So is all your charging issues just with the extended battery ?
The same results with the stock battery ?

I was just curious if it might be a bad battery .
