Charging speed greatly reduced

So been using the nexus 7 for almost 2 years now. The charging USB cable length was always a bit too small for most wall sockets.
Anyway recently my tablet which usally charges with in 3 hours from 10% started taking up to 6 hours for the same. Two days ago I saw that there was a small tear in the USB cable near the micro USB pin. Could this be the reason for the slow charging?
And if it is can I use any other USB cable to replace it or do I have to get one specifically made for Nexus 7?
My charger is original and despite the charging issues battery still shows the same endurance under usage.

Any micro-USB should work, but, man, have I been surprised at the variation in ability to charge from one cable to the next! I got the app, Ampere, and it can monitor charging current, and will show quickly which cable is doing a better job. In general, the smallest diameter cables seem to do poorest.

you need to make sure your charging cable is rated for about 2.1mA, anything less and its slooooow charge city.....
same thing goes for the little wall charger box, needs to be 2.1milliamp.

if all else fails and its still slow charging after making sure you have the proper charging equipment you might need to swap out the micro USB for a new one. I had to do this after 2 years. Now I'm back on the fast track ;)

A Nexus 6 charger will charge faster or could damage the Nexus 7?

I don't believe a Nexus 6 charger would harm the N7, it would only pull the juice it needs.

sorry guys I kind of double tapped that one and then expanded :p

the Nexus 6 charger would not harm the Nexus 7. without the Qualcomm 2.0 quick charge in the Nexus 7 it would just charge as normal. If the N6 charger is 2.1 A it will charge the same rate as the original N7 charger :)
