Charging symbol stays on while charging with phone switched off

I have a Pixel 2 running 8.1, rooted via Magisk.

When the phone is switched off and I connect a charging lead, a large "battery charging" symbol appears on the screen, centred. I would expect this to disappear after a short time, but it stays on all the time. Even when I disconnect the lead, it stays on. I can only make it disappear by pressing and holding the power button for about 20 seconds.

When the phone is switched on, charging is indicated in the top status bar as per normal.

Not sure if this is a "feature" of the root image or something else... has anyone seen this behaviour?

My operating system is not modified and I'm running the latest Android Version 9.
I'm not seeing the behavior you describe.

There's something rotten in Denmark - the charging symbol should definitely go away when you disconnect the cable with the phone turned off.
Are you using the stock Recovery or a 3rd party recovery such as TWRP?
I assume that since you're using Magisk you're using the stock Oreo firmware?

Thanks. I suspected this and there seems to be a similar thing listed in the Magisk github issues list. With the trend to always-on displays I wanted to check. Using stock, yes.

If you're using the stock firmware then nothing that Magisk does should be affecting the device when it's off; the only thing that might affect it is whatever Recovery software you have installed.
I'd take a serious look at the Recovery software (TWRP?) to see what's in their issues list. You might even want to revert to the stock Recovery (from my understanding you can still run Magisk with the stock Recovery, although it may be less efficient) to see if the problem goes away.
Worse comes to worse, flash the stock image and if the problem still occurs then it's time to contact Google.
