Charging/USB cable

Is it ok for me to use a longer cable to charge my DX? The one that it came with is not long enough to reach the nightstand from the wall outlet. Can I just go to best buy and pick up like a 6 foot cable or something?
You are way better off to get an extension cord to go between the wall outlet and the changer for a couple bucks at WalMart. Better yet, use a cheap surge suppressor to help protect it.

Long USB cables can cause it to take longer to charge due to voltage drop. The longer the cable the bigger the drop. A long cable could also even damage the phone with an under-voltage.

Doesn't the mV output matter or no? I ask because I know the BB mcro usb charger puts out less than the moto one.

OP: I would think all you have to do is get a longer micro usb cable to plug into the ac adapter.
The charger you need will be rated 1000 mA. There are some 850 mA chargers that can work but 1000 mA is much safer.

Also make sure it says 5V. The Garmin and other 10V micro USB chargers will fry your phone.

Too little current (mA) will at best make it charge slowly and at worst cook the phone. Too little votage can cause an under-voltage and fry your phone too.

Too much voltage will fry it almost every time and then you get to see it's whitish-blue soul rise up to the heavens.

If you buy chargers rated for your phone from http://store.androidcentral.com/, you will get a good charger for a low price and not smoke your $500 phone. And you will be supporting Android|Central.

The charger that came with outputs 850 mAh. If we get a 1000 mAh, would that cause problems, based on the info you provided above?

Also, I'm not sure if the heavier gauge of this cable provides any benefit, but it look good & gets good reviews.

A standard USB port on your computer is 500mA and it will not "cook" your phone it will charge your phone but not at a fast rate. As the battery in most phones is 3-3.6 volts you need a voltage that is 4.5 to 5.5 volts to create voltage potential to charge the battery. The phone will have a built in voltage regulator to regulate the voltage to the required charging voltage.
That being said if you applied 6 or 8 volts to the charging input it may be enough to fry the regulator.
Bottom line any quality micro USB charger should be 5 volts that is the USB standard it should also be 500mA minimum . Anything more than 500mA will cause the phone to charge faster.

I agree that you should use a quality charger like any of the OEM ( Moto LG BB) units or a good aftermarket unit. Stay away from the cheap stuff online.

1000mA will not hurt the phone. Any device will only use as much current (mA) as it needs. The mA rating on a charger is the maximum it can supply not the amount that it constantly supplies. Your auto battery for example may be rated to supply 700amps but if you turn on the dome light it may only draw 2 or 3 amps. Make sense?

Yes it does. Thank you :)

This is the one I bought to charge my HTC Incredible. It gets really good reviews and is OEM Motorola & is rated at 1,000 mAh (thus my question above). With the Incredible it allowed me to actually use the GPS and keep the battery charged, unlike many of the lower rated ones. For $6.25, it's also a good deal.

That is a good charger. I am the communications officer for our local fire/EMS dept. and have about 15 to 20 of those chargers in our trucks. Never had a problem with them except when some of our idiot members yank them by the cable to pull the plug out.

how long does it take for everyones phones to charge? it seems like it take FOREVER to charge..but that battery life is pretty good so im not complaining just wondering

I would hope that a 5V/850 ma charger would be adequate, given that is the rated output of the charger shipped with the Droid X.
