When I plug in my GNex into my Mac it charges very slow. A lot slower than when plugged into the wall. Is this the case with all laptops or is it just cause Android phones and Macs don't go well together? This is my first Android phone so bear with me. I'm using a late 2010 11" MacBook Air and using the cable that came with the phone.

Laptops only put out 500mV, whereas a wall charger puts out 1V. It won't charge nearly as fast off of USB or a smaller car charger.

This has nothing to do with it.

I was just surprised with how slow it was because my iPhone would charge fast when on usb or wall charger.

My nexus charges very slowly with the usb port on my Toshiba windows 7 laptop. In fact, it is so slow I don't charge it that way. Electric outlet works best. I can charge from 30% to full charge in about an hour. That is great for me. My iphone charged exactly the same way. Has to be the lower voltage coming from the usb port on the computer.:D

A laptop puts out 5 v at 500 mA. Apple computers sometimes put out less then 500 mA too. The GNEX wall charger puts out 5 v at 1000 mA IIRC.

Quick question on USB charging. I'll soon be getting a Gnex. I know USB charging is slow (read it on multiple forums for both Blackberry and Android). I'm just wondering if the slower charge is better for the battery over the long term as opposed to the wall outlet? Or is the difference over 2-3 years not enough to worry about?

USB 2.0 is just rated for 500mA. Some output slightly less. Not an Apple specific problem afaik.

Most wall chargers are 1000mA (1A). Some are 1.5A or even 2A. They say on the label.

Shouldn't make a difference in the life of the battery.

Turn phone off while charging, the screen uses a lot of power. Have you tried a different USB port? Its possible you have plugged it into a USB 1 port which supplies less power than USB 2 at 5V and 500ma.

Different wall plug can supply different amperages, so unless you say how much it supplies (its written on it), can't say whether you'd expect it to be faster or not (if greater than 500ma then yes, will charge faster).

If you are rooted, get Franco's kernel app. It allows you to change the voltage when charging USB to charge way quicker . And you get an awesome kernel.
