[Chatter] "Where everybody knows your name ..."

So I think I'm going bite the bullet and flash 3.3 when I get home (be my first JB ROM!).

I'll likely be safe and backup my photos/SDcard items, but will it delete my screen shots/photos or anything like that when I wipe/format system? That's all I really care about losing - I can always re-download apps and whatnot.

Formatting system and wiping data won't delete your photos and screen shots. But a backup is a good idea anyway in case something goes wrong and you need to restore back to stock.

Seriously tho I don't see why a maker of a smart phone can't make a phone out of the box unlocked and rooted, have an restore program incorporated into the operating system that could flash an factory image if the phone was to get borked. All without carrier interference.
It would be an option for the user to choose to flash any custom Rom, kernal.

But if they did screw something up would be as simple as flashing a stock image all provided to them from the maker of the phone and not altered by the carrier. Also that factory image include into the phones operating system.

I don't see how that is taking anything away from the carrier .

@davidnc think of the tech support said company would need to handle customer complaints when they can't flash custom Roms, or brick their phone from not understanding what they are doing. With locked phones it also sets a stand point for warranty service. I've read many threads on people bricking devices (android/Icrap/blackberry) and serves them right for not understanding the consequences. Also carrier tech support would be absurd. Its generally a lot easier to help someone if they are using approved software for that carrier. If you called your carrier for support on your phone that's running a custom/hybrid rom, they won't know wtf you're talking about. And usually that's what they point to is the fact its not approved so it turns into your problem not theirs. If it ain't broke don't break it. Just my $0.02.

Honestly I agree with this. Coming from a economic standpoint and accounting standpoint if the company had the phones unlocked and rooted off the bat they would have to have a contingency ready for the insane amount of warranty claims when someone bricks their phone. That is why when we unlock/root and install a custom ROM we are out of the warranty. This eliminates a massive liability on the companies balance sheet for warranty claims resulting from people not knowing what they are doing. Granted, the company needs to establish a basis for warranty claims and record a liability but its a much smaller liability on their books if they send out a phone locked.

Have to say I agree. The liability would be far to massive for any company to willingly undertake. I can see my parents bricking their phone just trying to turn it on or off if it was unlocked. There are far to many technologically illiterate people out there that think they know everything about phones/computers/dvd players etc that will disregard all disclaimers before reading the first word and brick their phone. Then to them it is the companies fault. We understand the risk, and choose to do it. I do wish all companies sent phones out with unlocked boot-loaders, but it is another way to control the environment and keep claims of bricked/broken phones down. As long as the nexus line continues I have no real issues since I'll always have a decent, if not good, option to turn to.

Re: [Chatter] GOT MORE JELLY BEAN THAN A BOY AND HIS BLOB

Im running JB 3.3 right now. So far I love it.

Love it as long as I did a superwipe, JB Bootloader along with the rom.

Before most JB roms would eventually boot to the animation and loop there. Would require a adb flash of stock files to get phone to work again.

Now that Jake has JB on 3.3 running AOSP 4.1.1 its by far the best one I have used yet. I think the only one I have not tried would be Bugless Beast. Might give it a shot in the next day or so.

EDIT: Cant wait until AOKP gets in on this 4.1.1 JB orgy.

Lol we all just biding time til AOKPs first JB build :)
Oh and til our 7's get here

I like it, sometimes it predicts too well like a idiot though. When I double space after sentences it puts in some word combination I had no intention of using.

Very true. Sometimes it's annoying but I did tap a whole sentence w/o needing to type
