i have the merkur long handle - seen really good reviews for the merkur heavy duty (short handle) as well.
here's what i suggest - or at least, here's what i do -
merkur long handle, and i purchased a sampler pack of 5 platinum razors for 5 different brands to test out which ones i like best ...
colonel conk shave soap AND pick a shave cream (i've got a tube of taylor of old bond) - the soap goes in the mug/bowl, and i put a few drops of the cream on top of the soap, and lather them up together. soap gets thick, but it's dry, and the cream is on the thin side, but doesnt dry out the skin. so i mix them together.
make sure you get a decent brush - the good ones are better badger, pure badger, and best badger (there's more expensive grades above that, but you can get those in the range of 30-60).
i also have a stand to keep the brush drying out upside down.
i'll post a pic later if you want when i'm home of what the whole set up is like.
then you need to figure out the grain of your beard, and what's the best way to shave it. took me about 2 weeks shaving 4x a week to get the feel for the safety razor and really figure out the best directions to shave my face. in the end, the shave is better (closer, but takes a few minutes longer than cartridge) and cheaper (the razors cost like nothing. and they're sharper than cartridge).
also, pic of my desk at school. mad boring.
and i skipped soup bc the gf wanted fries - got a burger instead. it wsa delicious. it had bacon of course.
