Cheaper way to get off-contract Evo 3Ds?

Hey all,

I was just curious (because it sounds like it would work in my mind), I am a current Sprint customer and am grabbing the EVO 3D on the 21st with my upgrade, but what seems weird to me is that the standard price without an upgrade is $550, but if I wanted to grab a few extra couldn't I just start a new account, buy it at 200, pay the 200 ETF and get the phone for $400 instead of $550?

If so, why does anyone pay $550 for them? If I bought one and cancelled the contract immediately are there any additional restrictions I don't know about?

Any input?

Thanks!

I believe your under thinking the situation here. You could do that but then you would still be paying your contract fees. If you decide to cancel before 30 days you would have to return the phone or pay the full amount.

ps I asked sprint this very question years ago and that is what I was told.

When upgrade your phone, you will pay FULL price because you are still under 2-years contract. If you want to cancel contract, you must pay a $200 fee a line.

That would be waste over $430 for early termination fee ($200), buying new EVO 3D ($200), Insurance ($7), and activation ($25 or $35). Up to you.

Edit: Oh and if you like to return EVO 3D back before 30 days, no problem. You can exchange new phone no fee. :)

I know they pull it, but I have Experian Triple Alert and as far back as I can remember I haven't seen Sprint do any reporting on it. Way back when I got my first cell phone (at 16) I got a hit to determine my deposit, but can't think of anything else.

Good thought though, might double check with Sprint and watch my credit monitoring if I try it.

(Fun fact, enough companies I do business with have had database breaches that I've had free monitoring and credit reports for 3 years..lol)

So does that mean you just have to pay the first month's bill then?

Amazon has the phone w/o contract for $500, Wirefly for $600, anything under $500 is a savings.

I guess I didn't make it as clear as I could have at the start. I have one friend that is looking for a good deal and no where near an upgrade, and then I was thinking of selling one to pay for my own upgrade if it worked.

So to combine math from the previous posts:

$200 for ETF, $200 for EVO 3D, (Insurance is optional isn't it?), (Activiation is waived if you buy it online last I checked)...

If you have to pay for a month of service though, that could be a wrench in the plan (I don't think they have any smartphone plans cheaper than..~70 or so, didn't think of that so haven't compared. Figured you could cancel and they'd prorate you for a days worth of cell service).

Thanks for the info everyone, helps my thought process. Judging by a few posts I'm not the first to think about it. :)

It won't effect your credit, because you paid the EFT. AFAIK, the only way it can affect your credit is if you have a remaining balance that was left unpaid. But if you don't have a balance, they can't report you to the collection agency.

That's just to the best of my knowledge, someone correct me if I'm wrong =)

Or, get it off contract at amazon for $470 and keep your credit score...

You would have to pay the first month or else if you cancel within 30 days the phone would need to be returned or paid in full. At least as far as I understand the contract thats the way it is.

your credit report reflects when someone checks your credit, i do not know how long this information stays there but i think i have some one my report from over a year ago. if you have a lot of people checking your credit it does effect your credit score. so doing it once would be no big deal, but if someone wanted to do it many times to try and pull some shenanigans or something it would effect their credit.
