Check time during phone call?

Is there a way to check the time during a phone call?
I find it strange that I'm able to talk to someone on my watch, but can't check the time during a phone call. This is a watch, and checking time should be first priority.
I'm also unable to view incoming messages during a call, as well as not being able to go to any other screen.

This will not work if you're using the watch remotely.
For example, if I don't have my phone with me, but have all messages and phone calls forwarded to my watch over 3G. I find this convenient. Especially for those times when I'm wearing sweatpants or shorts. I don't have to carry my huge Note 4. All I need is my watch and Bluetooth Headset to make and receive phone calls, while keeping my phone at home. Everything is forwarded to my watch.
