Re: Usb-C inconsistent connectivity

If you have a local repair shop Google contracts with, you can do local repair without this cross shipping. Google contracts with uBreakIfix stores.

I'm going to assume support would have offered that option if there was anyone near me. I don't particularly care about the credit card hold; it's not an imposition on me and I've done it more than a few times over the years with no problem. I'm just curious to know why they want to hold full retail price ($999 plus tax) for a refurbished phone.

Re: Usb-C inconsistent connectivity

Actually, the 3XL in my configuration (Just Black, 128 GB), is selling new at the Play Store for just $799. So why hold $999 for a refurbished device?

Re: Usb-C inconsistent connectivity

Everytime you pump gas, gas station put a $100 or so hold on your card as well. It's a hold, not charge.

Surely you realize that that is not the point.

Technically (the confirming email even says so) if for some reason they never receive my returned 3XL, they are going to charge me $999 plus tax for a refurbished phone when the current price of the very same, brand new, phone is just $799.

Honestly, I'm getting the urge to *not* return my phone, just so I can see what they will do and then maybe make a huge public fuss if they really do charge me the full amount.

I would have no problem with them placing a hold for, let's say 80% of the $799 cost of a new phone, but it is simply impossible to justify full retail price for a refurbished phone.

Re: Usb-C inconsistent connectivity

$999 is the MSRP list price. $799 is sale price. The price of the phone can go back to list price anytime the sale is over. So, it is natural for Google to put a hold for full MSRP as sale price changes all the time. After all the purpose is to make sure you return your old phone, not to sell you a new phone. After all, Google thinks someone has to be really something wrong in their head to keep a used phone for full retail price :)

Re: Usb-C inconsistent connectivity

So, you are saying that a refurbished phone can and should sell for the same price as a brand new one? Also, if you've ever received a replacement phone from Google, you know that it is *only* the phone, packed in a plain brown box. No accessories, no pretty packaging, etc. Again, same price as a new phone?

I would add, by the way, that for so many people to be having port issues on a phone that is, at most, 9 months old is a pretty sad commentary on the design of the USB-C port.

I really like pixel phones, and will continue to buy them, but their track record from the Nexus line all the way up is pretty bad concerning phone quality. After 2 class action lawsuits (so far) and this many years later, I'm starting to doubt they're ever going to get any better :-[

No, I didn't say that at all. I said the purpose of the credit hold is not to sell you a phone but to make sure you return the phone.

Um, no.

The email confirmation states quite plainly:

  • You'll need to return your old Project Fi Pixel 3 XL (128GB, Just Black) within 21 days of the shipment of the replacement to avoid being charged for the full price of the replacement device (plus tax and shipping, if applicable)
  • If it turns out that the problem with your Project Fi Pixel 3 XL (128GB, Just Black) isn't covered under warranty, you may be charged up to the full cost of the replacement device

And, the shipping confirmation states, "Remember that if we don’t receive your old device 21 days after your replacement ships, you will be charged $1,062.44, which is the full value of your replacement device." (emphasis mine)

I don't want to belabor this, but no way should a refurbished device shipped in plain packaging without any accessories be charged at full retail price. Plus tax, no less!!!

Re: Usb-C inconsistent connectivity

Again, they just want to make sure you return the phone, not to keep it.

Re: Usb-C inconsistent connectivity

Thanks everyone for your input here, I tried other basic cleaning methods and it didn't help so might just go for replacement since I'm within warranty period. I'm more worried getting back a shoddy refurbished model... My screen has a very minor scratch not sure if that will cause any issues with replacement.

The "refurbished" unit I received looks for all intents and purposes to be brand spanking new. Not a scratch or blemish anywhere to be found and the USB-C port functions perfectly.
