Chromecast on a 720p tv? Picture washed out

I guess I should add I'm planning to use it for things like YouTube and Netflix. I know tab casting runs 720p (though reports are that Chromecast up converts to 1080p). Is there now a setting to pick the resolution you want? Most everything I've seen was from Fall of last year, but many reports even as new as this month are that it wasn't working and complaints of not having a resolution setting option for the cast itself.

I also use my chromecast on a 720p TV and it looks fine, just as it should.

Me too - mines a cheapy Technicka (Tesco UK ownbrand) TV about 3 years old. 720p display, but it accepts 1080 input - I can't see any difference in picture quality when the input resolution is 'wrong'.

How can I play avi files with chromecast?

1) Manually convert them to MP4/h264 using a desktop transcoder like Handbrake and then use LocalCast/Avia/EZCast for media stored on device or Plex/BubbleUPnP/LocalCast for media on PC.
2) Stream them from a PC with Plex/Plex Server, BubbleUPnP/BubbleUPnP Server etc (the PC will trancode them on the fly)
3) Use RealPlayer Cloud (file is sent to RealPlayer cloud server for transcoding and sent back to Chromecast)
