Chromecast: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube

When I start a YouTube cast from my phone (Galaxy Nexus) or tablet (Nexus 7 and Nexus 10), the video starts playing fine... but on the device, the YouTube video window display changes to "Connecting..." and doesn't allow me to control the video or add new videos to a queue. In fact the only way to play another video is to close/kill YouTube and start it again. No such issues when casting from Chrome on a PC. My phone/tablet are running fairly stock 4.3 ROMs. Anyone else seeing this?

I'd say 1 in 10 attempts youtube actually works correctly. This is a Windows 7 pro laptop Chrome browser.

I'm finding many videos will yield a big:

"There was an error playing this video.
Please choose another video."

and..

"Please check your internet connection."
Retrying in ....

(even if video does play!)

What's up with that?

this sounds to me like there is a connection issue with your wi-fi lan.

is your PC connected to the router by Cat 5 or by wi-fi? Any power saving settings on your android devices that may be shutting wi-fi off?

Re: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube

I just received a second Chromecast, so did some more experimenting... first off, doesn't seem like a h/w issue since problem is seen on both. I tried them with two different TV's too. My Wifi router is in the same room as my TV and tablet. The only thing I might have different to others is that I use multiple UniFi access points (to avoid dead spots around my house)... these all appear as a single SSID, and I have no problems connecting with all my devices... but perhaps there is an issue with Chromecast? I'm going to try with an Apple device too just to rule out the ROMs I have on my phone/tablet.

is the PC that can cast connected by Wi-Fi or a cable?

Re: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube

Tried PC both with WiFi and wired... both work fine. Also just tried an iPhone and iPod.. both working OK too. So... that seems to point to my Nexus devices. As mentioned I'm using close to stock 4.3 ROMs and I just added gapps-jb-20130813-signed. Specifically I have Project Flaming Monkey 4.3 ROM on my Nexus 10 and MMuzzy 4.3 on my Galaxy Nexus. I suppose next step is to try stock ROM.

Re: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube

I'm having the same issue. When I cast from my GS3 (running 4.2.1), the video does quickly cast to the TV but I get "connecting" on my phone screen for a while until it finally says it couldn't connect to the CC. I get the gray bar at the bottom of the phone telling me to find a video to cast, but no playback controls.

Yet, the CC app itself says it is connected.

Going to play around more tonight, but couldn't figure it out.

Re: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube

I also have this issue. I've narrowed it down to it being on a LAN segment that goes through my proxy server/firewall. As soon as I connect the chromecast and android device to the wifi on the main router (so it is outside of the firewall) then everything works great. The device's youtube app connects and allows me to add more more videos to the queue or to pause/stop/etc. the active video. I haven't tried diagnosing it further yet but I expect that there is something getting blocked that shouldn't be so I just need to figure out what and let it go through. Or maybe just letting the chromecast bypass the proxy server will be enough.

Re: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube

I haven't run into any issues so far like this with my Chromecast... It froze once but that's really it.

Have you tried a different router (if possible)? Or I'd try putting the Chromecast within the DMZ zone of your routers firewall.. I did this for mine first thing.

Sent from my T-Mobile HTC One using AC Forums.

Re: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube

I'm still scratching my head on this issue... as mentioned previously, there are no problems when using chromecast from a PC or an Apple device... it's only when I try from any of my Android devices. I loaded up stock ROMs, both 4.2.2 and 4.3 versions and still see same problem. I've tried moving the chromecast into DMZ... doesn't help. I have a roll-your-own pfsense router and have checked the logs to see if anything strange is happening, but don't see anything. I'm gonna try borrowing a plain old linksys router to see if that helps.

Re: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube

Mine's working fine now. . . not sure what happened. I downloaded the recent CC update and moved the CC from my TV to my Onkyo. Also plugged it in instead of using USB.

Might have been the reset by unplugging it?

Did you find anything else? I am experiencing the same problem.

Re: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube

I had the exact same problem until a few moments ago. I decided to look into the logs while trying to connect to cast anything from either my Nexus 5 or Nexus 7. I noticed that it gave a network connection error because it could not reach YouTube, but it also said that that hostname resolved to an IPv6 address.

I disabled IPv6 on my home network a few weeks ago, and apparently that was the culprit. I reenabled IPv6 and everything magically started to work again.

This might help you on the way to your solutions. Good luck!

Re: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube

hey. Since no one else further forwarded their issues, I am guessing enabling IPv6 was the solution.
I am not so smart with PC/internet details, so could you please help me how and where I would be able to enable it? thanks anyway.

I am posting this in the hopes that people will see this answer. And maybe build on the things i have determined below. This problem has developed on me randomly overnight. From what i can tell several years difference from the original posting to now have passed, so this is an ongoing issue that i believe google needs to look into resolving.

I use an advanced pfsense controlled network config with all hardwired computers and wifi devices sitting on their own separate subnet. I have multiple different android devices on hand, the primary ones are a pair of Note 4's with one modded and one not, as well as a dual boot tablet. I have confirmed that :

This is not a hardware issue with the phones
This is not a hardware issue with the chromecast,
This does not happen on any other app on any mobile device with casting abilities
This problem does not occur on the computers on my network on a separate subnet
PFSense has not changed in functionality or its settings in the last 90+ days
pfsense logs show no alteration in the requests being sent through my network
and
ONLY YOUTUBE HAS THIS PROBLEM.
The version of youtube on all devices are different, so its not version sensitive

I have:
flushed and reset all settings to what they were backed up to be and working properly 90+ days ago in pfsense,
flushed and reset all settings on my dell 2748,
flushed and reset all settings on my modem itself
factory reset my chrome cast,
factory reset my wifi AP's,
removed all satellite wifi access points leaving only 1 active
changed that wifi AP to a new unused previously AP
altered the wifi subnet,
merged the subnets,
removed pfsense from the wifi / chromecast loop by setting up a seperate network

not a one of these things resolved the issue.

fear not i have also devised a workaround, which is as follows :

Open the home app on your android device, and then expand the left menu. You will see something along the lines of a "cast your screen and audio" option. Enable this and then open youtube, and use the OS to do the mirroring legwork. Yes this has its limitations but overall solves the youtube not casting problem, until someone fixes this on a developer level.

Re: Chromecast: Stuck at "Connecting..." when casting YouTube - THE PROBLEMS AND THE ANSWER

I had the same thing. I killed youtube and changed the youtube app permissions to phone and local drive an everything works fine again.
