I know it was said some TVs will work without the external power. If this is true what TV would work? It may influence my next TV purchase

Any TV with a fully functional USB port can power the chromecast. USB ports that are "service only" ports will not work.

I have a Samsung plasma that I bought in 2007 with a USB port that is service only and it works just fine. I was surprised, but it does work.

If you have a TV with HDMI ports and has USB power you're supported I've even seen it work on almost a decade old DLP TVs

No, i may have imagined it but i recall that someone somewhere said that some capable tv wont even need the usb power.

I think you are referring to the CC functionality being built in.

I don't know for sure if it will happen or not.

I will say this. I had a new Samsung tv delivered this week. It is one of the brand new 2014 models and it doesn't. I can miracast from my Dell venue 8 pro, and screen mirror from my note 3. I checked a few of my CC enabled apps and nothing.

Check the latest Sony and LG. Those would be my guess if anything. They both still kind of support Google TV to.
