i have three music player, when i open .mp3 it asks me to choose the player.

i, however, set one as default. now whenever i open .mp3 it uses the default.

how do i clear the default? i can't tell which player is using right now, otherwise i could go into that app and clear cache.

Go to Settings->Apps, then scroll through the list until you find your music player apps. Open each one and do the following: scroll down and tap "Set as default," then tap the "Clear Defaults" button.

i have identified 'sound player' is the default, but when i go to settings->apps.. i do not see sound player???

When you go to settings, apps and tap the three dots on the upper right, choose default apps and see what you have set. Should be able to clear it from there.

In Settings->Apps, go to the three-dots menu and "Show system apps." Sound Player isn't on my GS9, either, but there's a "Sound picker." Could that be it?

i also' see 'Sound Picker' and NOT 'sound player' under 'show system apps'. i clear cache and clear data in sound picker.

afterward i tap on .mp3, it still default to sound player.

Well, after back to the menu and choose default apps, not system. When the next screen opens at the bottom is Set As Default, tap it, scroll to Sound Picker, tap it and then tap remove from default. Or just uninstall the app that you don't want to use, open your music and you can choose a different player and then reinstall the app if you want it.

In Settings->Apps->(three-dots-menu-button)->Default apps, my GS9 shows the following: Browser app, Calling app, Messaging app, Home screen, Device assistance app, Default app selection, and Set as default. Under "Set as default," I tried setting VLC as my music player (it's currently Samsung Music), but it only gives me the option to set it to open URLs, not file types. So there has to be another way to accomplish what @monkeycsk wants, but I can't figure it out, short of uninstalling and re-installing as suggested by @Super Dave426.
