Clockworkmod Recovery

I am getting a little concerned about the fact that Odin will not recognize my phone. In DL mode windows says there is something wrong w/ the USB device.
Am I ever going to be able to flash recoveries and do backups etc. if I can't use odin? Didn't they get it so that the Vibrant could take the install of CWM w/out odin?
This doesn't seem like a very valid reason to get my phone swapped within my 30 days, at least I don't think it is...
thank you...

you have installed the correct drivers for your device right?

Question: I get no idea that the phone will switch into download mode should I get some indicator. Turn it off. Hold down the volume down button for a few seconds... no indication of any mode change. Attatched usb - Odin will not detect anything. Am I missing something?

I have the most up-to-date drivers for Win7.

how to get into bootloader:

1. remove battery from phone
2. hold down volume down
3. plug in usb cable

the phone will show a black screen with yellow writing on it (i forget what it says exactly) and one of the id:com boxes in odin will fill in with information

is there any way to use this on a mac? or can u only use this on a PC? i have already rooted my phone using the mac method and it worked out great. i will be doing the voodoo lag fix as soon as i get this done. is there anything else i need to know about my phone and all of this technical stuff before i go deeper into this? thanks.

also is there anyone who wants to/can make a video tutorial on how to do this like they did for the mac root method? thanks again everyone for all the hard work you guys put in.

^ cosign, I need some help here as well. The mac root video was awesome, the root worked perfectly, but I still feel a little unfulfilled after checking my speeds with Quadrant.
Does anyone know how to get Voodoo installed through a mac as well?

Android newbie in need of clarification... I click on the link to get the CW.tar file but do not know how to download it? How is it that i apply this file in Odin? I have successfully installed Odin and my phone will go into download mode but honestly even with the instructions I am lost from here. I have Rom Manager and everything else that I need from what I have read so please help.

Was wanting to do a backup before installing anything, but as i tried, and failed, with rom manager I got an error.
Is using the Odin the ONLY way to make a backup before doing anything else to the phone.

First time android user coming from BB.

Sorry if this has been covered, but havent found it.

it seems u didnt post the .tar file or im just blind ^_^ but found it on XDA and everything worked perfect. Thanks!

Finally took the plunge and rooted... installed ROM manager and backed up current ROM (which is just the stock one). Wanted to make sure it works and when I'm in recovery mode I try to load it and it loads about halfway loaded and I get

E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted

I'm sure I'm missing something thanks in advance for any help!

*Edit: May be the same problem ragarm (above) has

Alright i downloaded Odin and the CWMRecovery.tar and Odin recognizes my phone and i checked the pda box and put the tar file there and hit start. I get "Odin v.3 engine (ID:4).." and nothing else happens, my phone is still in download mode and Odin is still open.

Am i doing this right?

Thanks in advance.

Stalled out...

Got the right drivers. Windows recognizes the phone and get the yellow box on Odin (COM3). ran the cwm tar file in the PDA box. Got the following messages:
Odin v.3 engine (ID:3)
File analysis
Setup Connection...
Initialization...

been stalled out at initialization for about fifteen minutes now. I'd be happy to start over, but I'm afraid to brick it if I unplug it in the middle. Help!

EDIT: went ahead and unplugged it. left battery out. reinstalled samsung drivers. plugged it back in after starting Odin - recognized on COM3, stalled at initializing...

EDIT: FUBAR. Still have not been able to get the cwm on via odin, and now when I try to start the phone up normally I get the phone - ! - computer screen, which as I understand means I've got a brick on my desk. Where do I stand now? Can I still find a way to get cwm working, or do I have to do a restore on odin? Saw that over at xda. It's amazing how fast you can get out of your depth with this stuff....

EDIT: Fixed! Tried with a different cable and the CWM installed in 10 seconds! Sorry for dumb question.

When choosing the .tar file in Odin, do I choose the CWM.zip that I downloaded or do I unzip the file first then choose the .tar file from the folder?

You should unzip it first so that you see the .tar file, because that's the one you have to send over using the PDA box.

first of all,

thank you to all the people on this forum, especially the civilized conversations.

I have one question regarding the ROM manager. I went through all the steps and managed to download the JT rom. I am expecting a few calls today and want to hold off on flashing the new ROM, but where exactly is it stored after download? Where do I point ROM manager for the file?

edit: opened ROM manager and selected Download file, and it loaded it automatically. I like everything so far.
