Cloth Earpiece

I've found it interesting during JerryRigEverythings video that the earpiece is made of CLOTH not metal nor plastic. I wonder why that was the case and I wonder how that'll sustain in terms of longevity

If it's a synthetic (plastic, etc) cloth it could be just fine in terms of long term durability, short of something sharp somehow managing to work its way into the decidedly narrow slit in which it resides. Which, to happen, would practically have to be intentional.
