You ever look at all the updates that get leaked out to the small developers public and are stable and running on 1/10 of the android phones weeks before they are released by the official carrier?

You would think Verizon, Tmo, ATT, Sprint etc, and sammy, Motorola, etc would realize these guys are the know how and we are the beta test community. They could have so much more developed for the phones if they would just offer those guys jobs and offer those of us that browse the chance to beta if we would like. Go with the open beta's it works for the gaming industry and Microsoft with the operating systems...why not do it with phone releases?

The sad fact is that, to Verizon and all the other carriers, these phones are little more than advertising platforms - their interest is not in providing customers the best performing, latest and greatest OS. Their interest is making as much money as they can pre-installing and hard coding advertiser's (as well as their own) products and services into the OS.

Microsoft has open beta programs because they're interest is in developing a solid, stable and broadly compatible OS. In this case, Google develops the OS, and it's already solid and stable. Samsung configures it to run on their individual hardware. The work is largely done. The hold up is getting all the "partner's" crappy apps installed and working, and limiting the phone to Verizon's liking, and I don't suspect that's something the developers at XDA have much interest in.

The purpose of Open Source is to enhance the code by letting the public have at it. That's exactly what xda does. Unfortunately that's where it stops once it gets into the hands of carriers and manufactures. All they care about is that they don't have to pay for or license the OS. They don't care about how good and much better the public can make the code.
