The 21 has more of a treble bias that can make music seem a bit brighter but can be harder on the ears after a while.
Keeping in mind that neither phone has any real bass, the 26 does a bit better down to maybe 120 hz and it can put out considerably more volume without apparent distortion compared to the 21 which sounds increasingly strained at ~75% volume and above. The 26 doesn't sound at all strained or degraded up to almost 100% volume.
The differences overall are not dramatic which I was a bit surprised by this given the fact that the 26 is five generations beyond the 21 but overall I'd give the audio quality of the 26 a 7/10 rating while the 21 is a 6/10.
I just wish they could figure some way to get a little more bass extension out of these phones. Though I haven't spent almost any time with iPhones, my recollection is that they do a better job with their audio implementation overall, but that's just based on some random memories as I can't compare the two products side by side.
For those of you have the S 23, 24 or 25, I'd love to know what your impressions are of the audio of the 26 compared to any of those phones.
