Complete noob question: What is stock recovery?

I have the 2.3.3 update and am finding it slow. I am hoping to downgrade to 2.2 (using the Froyo downgrade thread) and then root my phone to install helpful apps and custom ROMs

But it says in that thread that I need 'stock recovery'. Is that a recovery option that comes with every phone (so it could be called the 'recovery option that comes with the base, or stock, operating system') or is it something else?

Yes, it is the one that came with the phone from the factory. I added a picture to the ZVD thread showing what it looks like.

Yay! Thanks! I've seen that before; it showed up when I made the ill-advised switch to 2.3.

Thanks for the help. There oughta be a dictionary/wiki somewhere to help noobs. Updating it would be a total pain, though.
