I'm thinking about rooting my S4 phone but before I do, I want to backup everything so if I get a black screen of death, I'm still ok.

I saw the kies program but past posts seem to say it's unreliable. If that's still true, is there another option?

Thanks.

I just want to make sure I can get my phone working again if something goes wrong when I root my phone and put in a custom rom. Whatever I have to do or backup to achieve that goal is what I'm looking for.

nandroid backup would be what I want except I can't use that until AFTER I've already rooted my phone. Maybe kies is the only option?

Kies won't make a Nandroid. Do a nandroid in your custom recovery before you flash and everything will be fine.

Simply rooting it usually doesn't brick it

Would like to find out how to turn back on text messaging ringtones? Only able to get it to vibrate when receiving texts. Also would like my sounds to work. I had to do a factory reset after installing KitKat on my Samsung Gal S4 Active b/c none of the text messaging features worked and AT&T added a lot of junk apps in the update.

You might have broken audio drivers I've been seeing reports of it but have you went into settings and reset your message tone?
