First let me qualify... nothing bothers me more than Apple fanboys. OK, the snooty, hoity-toity atmosphere when walking into an apple store bothers me just as much. I give apple credit for innovation when it comes to iphones and before that ipods (though they shouldn't have exclusive rights to sell anything rectangular because of it). I can't stand the way apple tries to lock users in to their ecosystem vis-a-vis itunes, app-store, etc., and the way they take their customers for idiots by trying (unsuccessfully) to completely get rid of the concept of a file on all their devices. When all the patent lawsuits heated up I swore off Apple products for good. However, my wife has owned a Macbook for years, and recently dropped it onto our tile floor totaling it in the process :-\
Despite my protestations, and playing the role of Vanna White with the Windows laptops every time we went to Fry's or Best Buy, she insisted on getting a Mac. So finally, with me holding my nose the whole way, we marched into the Apple store and plunked down an ungodly sum of money for a shiny new Macbook Pro with Retina display?.
So now the confession... gigantic hole in my wallet aside, I have completely fallen for it. There is just no comparison to any other laptop on the market. It's all the little details, like the way the keys feel when you press down on them, the smooth, gentle transition when you dim the back-light, the incredibly tight tolerances of the seams, even how smoothly a USB stick slides into the socket is something that has to be felt to be believed (tryin' to stay PG here). There is no play whatsoever in the hinge, and it has just the right amount of resistance. The rigidity of the thing is unbelievable. It boots up SO damn quick. It's quiet, even under load. As much as I hate the Retina marketing BS, the screen is legit, and reading text on it is a true pleasure. In every possible way bar repairability/upgradability, comparing the new Macbook pros to any Windows laptop is like comparing a Maserati to a Ford Mustang.
OK there you go, I made my peace. I just wish someone, ANYONE had the ability to produce a Windows based top-shelf laptop that could come close to Apple. I can't stand that I love this hunk of aluminum.
