On my S4 I am trying to configure an L2TP VPN connection to the VPN Server hosted on my Synology DS214 NAS.

When I enter the actual WAN IP address on my network into my configuration settings it works (the router forwards the request to the NAS which has a static IP address). When I attempt to use the DDNS server that my NAS is registered with (myusername.synology.me) the VPN connection fails to be made.

Am I missing something?

When I want to access the GUI on my NAS from outside my home network I enter myusername.synology.me:5000 in my browser and I can manage my NAS as if I were home. Do I have to explicitly specify a port name in my VPN connection? I've tried the three ports that I need to open on my router but it did not work.

If your router doesn't do loopback, it won't work. You're going out, then back in. Some routers won't do that.
