So can I somehow get vodaphone service from america and get the GSM nexus and use it here? I dont understand how it works?

I may be incorrect but the GSM version sold here (I can't speak for elsewhere) lacks the hardware to use Verizon's network (they're owned by vodaphone so I assume you refer to them) so in a short answer. Nope

Cannot tell if trolling....

If not, then no. A GSM Nexus would have to be used on a GSM network. The only GSM networks in the US are AT&T and T-Mobile.

If you buy a Vodafone Nexus S you will need to make sure it is sim unlocked and then you will be able to use 3G and 2G on AT&T.

The European Nexus S supports the following frequencies:
2G GSM/GPRS/EDGE Quad-band (850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz)
3G HSPA Tri-band (850, 1900, and 2100)

AT&T Uses 850 and 1900 for 3G

What matters is the spectrum - i.e. the frequency range in which that particular networks runs its GSM. GSM is a protocol (a way of communicating information, think of it as writing info out in English - GSM - versus French - CDMA). The spectrum is the manner in which that information is delivered to/from the phone. So GSM on 900 MHZ would be delivering your English letter via Email, and GSM on 2000 MHZ would be delivering it via Fedex.
