Tried connecting to a LG and Hisense brand TV to watch a video I recorded. It will let me connect but then says file not supported. Is there any way to fix this or do I need a Samsung TV?

What kind of video were you trying to play? Have you tried with a different video file (maybe one that hasn't been recorded by the Note?). I haven't had issues with mine but my TVs are Samsung.

What about screen mirroring? Does that work or is that also failing?

HOw does one use screen mirroring?

Since I don't have internet or Wi-Fi at home, I use my Blu-ray player that has screen mirroring. Then from the top panel I select Smart View.

Chromecast, Google, Amazon, etc., dongles require something to get it at least set up. I tried one and my hot spot (someone said it would work), but then you need your phone to finish. I returned the dongle.

I was able to connect to my Samsung or LG with my Note 8 through mirroring

+1 for Chromecast, works a treat for watching films/video and playing music.

depending on the app you are using and the age and model of your LG, you may be able to use Chromecast. Some LG tv's have casting receivers built in.
what is the source of the video? what are you using to play the video

Just trying to play a video I recorded from Note 8. It acts like it's connecting, then drops out, gives error message. Tried it on another brand and almost dies the same.

Just a recording I did on phone. I guess that's what I'm trying to do is screen mirroring.

Yeah I found not all TVs built in screen cast or miracast technology plays nice with all devices especially if it's a bit older. Your safest bet is to get a Chromecast or physically connect your phone to your TV via HDMI.

If your LG tv is a recent model than it supports Chromecast. There are several video players in the play store that support Chromecast. You should be able to use one of them to cast to the LG. to check if your tv support Chromecast open the Google Play music app while connected to your Wi-Fi. start playing a song and see if you have the casting symbol if so tap it and see if your tv is listed. If it is than you should be able to use any video player with Chromecast support, such as VLC for Android
