connect pc though usb is it true that ics remove mass storage

I'm not trying to be difficult i'm not much of a person who takes alot of pics but I do have alot of songs mp3 in my music folder and 84 ringtones/notifications also forgot to mention I also transfer wallpapers onto phone if I copy like 3,4 songs mp3,using mtp format instead usb mass prob take awhile just for 2 i guess don't know much in mpt/ptp don't think ever use them before esp mpt part

Trust me, I transferred 10 gigs of music (thousands of songs) and have transferred 7gigs of Photos from my old Droid X to my S3 without issue. Took a few minutes (I do not remember how long) but to give you an example I just transferred 5 gigs and it took 5 min. (is that a long time compared to USB mass, probably) but it still not a long time. And no, you are not being difficult. I am just trying to assure you that you will be fine when transferring your data onto an S3.

Well l'll still got time figure out what to do seems since got alot of songs guess get 32vgb my memory card only have 8 gb on phone store what is ptp camera stuff

i'm just afraid that if i get a galaxy 3 once it connect to pc the mass storage won't show up i don't wanna select mpt or ptp

it would be nice if somebody has a windows vista on here can tell me if mass storage does in fact come up when connect pc

Mass storage is enable in ICS, but the way to achieve it's a little trick.
I think this change happens because from now on (ICS and after) you will need to umount the memrory card in Android before unplug the phone from PC. The procedure works in my Galaxy Note and I get it from:

With the USB cable UNPLUGGED:
1. Bring up Settings.
2. Click More… (under Wireless and network)
3. Then select USB utilities ~ Set USB cable connection mode.
4. Select Connect storage to PC then.
5. Connect USB cable from phone to PC
6. Select Turn on USB storage.
7. That’s all.

I'm with Mike340t, I DON"T do music but I do pix and its a pain in my ace to use mtp. When usb is SOOOO much easey-er. Transfer files both ways
with out the wireless BS. Or using some file share crap. Like buying a gun, pay & walk,....

I would love to know how to get USB mass storage working on my S3, but reading the OPs concerns, I don't really think USB MTP will be an issue...

Using MTP, you can still open the device in the Windows Explorer browser and drag and drop, copy and paste, etc. You don't need any special apps or anything like that, and it works just as fast as a standard USB mass storage device if you're copying media, music, pics, etc.

Any Windows system from XP and up *should* have no problem recognizing it.

The reasons some of the more "power users" prefer straight USB Mass Storage mode are:
- MTP only works with supported devices, such as windows computers -- if you tried to plug your phone in to your car's usb slot, for example, and use your phone as a usb drive you'd be unable to do so.
- Windows recognizes the MTP as a "device" not a "drive", so there are some limitations that arise from that (i.e. can't access via CMD prompt)

Honestly though, if the only thing you're trying to do is move media from your PC to your phone, such as the OP seems to be suggesting, you really won't notice the difference.

My guess is that Android and/or Samsung switched from USB Mass Storage to MTP/PTP because it is more user friendly, and as nice as it would be to still at least have the option to enable mass storage mode, most users won't even realize the difference for what it is they want to do.

If anyone reading this thread has successfully managed to get mtp working on WinXP (yes, I downloaded the XP add-in), I'd like to know.

The only success I had with my OneX was the HTC sync manager, but, it's junk: I wanted to sync a single video file & it started downloading all phone pics, etc.

What I'm trying to do: transfer about 1GB worth of mp4 files to watch on an overseas flight.

For now, I'm literally uploading to DropBox & copying down. This is the first time I've really missed ICS.

I've since upgraded to Windows 7, so I can't go back and test...but I'm pretty sure it worked just fine on my old XP system; just plugged it in and it showed up in Windows Explorer. Don't remember if I had to install drivers or not...

Go figure. I rebooted (not the first time since installing the XP mtp patch) and now it works. Whatever you did - thanks! Gotta love Windows when it acts random.

Mystery solved. Probably a newbie issue. Explorer window will show nothing until the phone is unlocked. Once unlocked, voil?!
