I find it weird that you have to download the android file transfer program to be able to connect the S3 to the mac.

My wife has the Galaxy S and you can just connect it to the mac via usb, is this something new with samsung ?

Also how do import the photos using iPhoto on the mac. The galaxy S3 does not show as a camera when you plug it in via usb.

Sounds like the S3 comes in the same format as the Galaxy Nexus, which does not allow USB Storage Mode (UMS) - only Media Transfer Protocol (MTP). This makes it a pain to use on a Mac. You may have to manually copy the photos over before importing them to iPhoto. Personally, I use Dropbox which has a feature that will automatically upload any photos taken on your phone to your computer via WiFi or cellular data. Pretty handy. If you don't already have Dropbox, you can sign up here.

Does drop box work with music and movies for the S3 ? I am trying to make it as easy as I can for my daughter to upload them to her phone.

Yes.. the SGS III actually comes with the DropBox app pre-installed with an offer for a free 50GB of storage for two years.

I am unable to get android file transfer to work on OSX 10.8.1 with my Galaxy S3.

I am however able to Sync using Missing Sync for Android and MTP. I have to first plug the phone in and then launch the desktop up and then I am able to sync folder, media. Contacts sync via Wifi.

I got Android Transfer to work after a reboot. Its finnicky though... It usually only works for me after a reboot and when it works its amazing. drag and drop. It doesn't do syncing though.

I have not been able to get Android Transfer to work at all on Mac. I tried rebooting phone and computer several times. No luck. So, I'm using WiFi File Explorer. There's a free and paid version ($0.99). It works beautifully and wirelessly.

I have a mac and i have tried just about everything, heard about a app called AirDroid and i love it! Give it a try its free!

Wow! AirDroid is amazing. I love the UI and available options. It's so Mac-like. Beautiful app. I confess I'd pay for it, in fact. It's a terrific free app. I also like the way you can connect using the QR code. Very cool! Thanks for the tip.

Sounds like your S3 is set to be a MTP when connected via USB. I have the same setup. When you plug in your phone to the mac on the notification screen it describes the USB connection you have. Click on that and then select to show the phone as a camera.

After that when you open iPhoto your phone will show up.

Good Luck

.....my question is what is on my phone, no notification screen shows up referring to the USB connection???

Welcome to the forums!
no notification screen shows up referring to the USB connection
Are you sure you're using a data cable? If you were using a charge-only cable then you'd only see the charging activity indicator. Are you seeing that?
