Considering a switch from the Galaxy S4 to Nexus 5...

Re: Might jump ship from the S4...thoughts?

It seems interesting to be so considerate of the audio output of the HTC One's speakers, but many are. I must be unique in that I can't imagine too many scenarios where its speaker quality would be very important to me outside of using the speakerphone. Now headphone output? Now that, to me, is important. ...but they don't let me out much.

If you are using the speaker for calls a lot it is important.

Headphone output seems the same to me on all these phones. I have yet to try one that stands out.

I will say that this here G Pad does put out surprisingly spacious audio from its two puny ovals. Psychoacoustics, they're getting better and better with it.

Re: Might jump ship from the S4...thoughts?

Well low speaker is no.longer a issue for me.with a tweak on xda forum. Same goes for wash out color. I have Franco kernel and the color is much better than stock.

Did you have to tweak anything to adjust the wash out color or does the kernel take care of it automatically?

Re: Might jump ship from the S4...thoughts?

I have both the S4 and the N5(and the One as well). As others have pointed out, speaker and camera quality on the S4 are vastly superior. Screen real estate is also noticeably larger on the S4 on full screen apps. I consider the displays a wash. The S4 has the more saturated colors, which I like but the N5 is sharper and brighter. I actually think the N5's screen is the best of the bunch. The N5 is faster and smoother at every turn. The N5 camera app is horrible, camera takes forever to focus but pics are better on average than the One. The S4 feels more substantial in hand. Battery life is about even. Despite what some are reported, my battery life on the N5 is outstanding. Overall, I couldnt pic between the S4 and the N5, fortunately, I dont have to.

Re: Might jump ship from the S4...thoughts?

I picked up the N5 last Friday and Sold my S4 on Sat. It's SO much faster and TW was starting to get on my nerves. It took me a full day to get used to the stock experience(first time), and it was a little frustrating but now I'm happy.

If we get new camera software, this phone will be pretty close to perfect(IMO). I also ditched verizon and switched to T-MO.....and that makes me happy. :)

Re: Might jump ship from the S4...thoughts?

I know the S3 isn't comparable to the S4 in a lot of ways, but I did finally get the 4.3 update for my S3 which makes it a bit closer. I ordered the N5 on the 21st and am anxiously awaiting it. Samsung has been awesome for me but I am growing tired of where their focus is as a company. I love the added gimmicks they offer, but I need the basics to be rock solid before I care about touch free controls. The S3 has just given me a few too many problems that shouldn't be an issue so I will see what LG is made of.

Re: Might jump ship from the S4...thoughts?

I have the S4 with AT&T. I got the N5 when it came out. I returned the N5. Like everyone is saying, the speaker on the S4 is way better. The camera on the S4 is better and has more settings which I sometimes use but at least it has them. I think battery life on the S4 is a tad better. The N5 is faster(but I would never notice with what I do with a phone). The N5 has a better screen for outside viewing( IPS vs. Amoled) The N5 has built in wireless charging whereas I bought the pad and disc for the S4 to have wireless charging. With all the high end phones out I really don't think you would see that much of a difference between the S4,N5,HTC One. Each of them will be better at some things and not as good at some things. I don't think you could go wrong with any high end smartphone Just my2c

YUp. Never buying a carrier device again. Ill admit that googles no prize BUT theyre better then any carrier ive dealt with.

Re: Might jump ship from the S4...thoughts?

I came to the N5 from a GS4 Google Edition, which I gave to my wife. I miss the SAMOLED HD display of the GS4 (I love the oversaturated colors), but I've grown to really love my N5. I hate carrier overlays (TouchWiz, Sense, etc.), so pure Android definitely takes the cake.

If you had a GPE GS4, you already had pure Android. What did you like better about the Nexus 5?

I am troubled that people mixing "pure google", which N5 is, with "pure android". The difference is getting more significant by each version released by google. If you follow AOSP, you would know these "Google Experience" are proprietary add-ons from Google, they are not, and should not, be part of the AOSP "experience".

I do not own N5 or GS4, I do own GN3 and N4, N7(both generations), I think Samsung products have edge in the hardware department (camera, removable battery, amoled screen). People obviously has preference about touchwiz vs Google Experience, to me, I like TW offering many convenient functions, like quick toggling of variety of functions. I am not a google centric person, so Google Experience doesn't attract me very much.

Re: Might jump ship from the S4...thoughts?

I use Nova Prime, and I have always-on Google Now. Unless I am misunderstanding you, which is very possible. :)

Can you say "ok google" from the desktop and have it do stuff without touching the phone? If not, you don't have the always-on google now. You have the normal version.

I looked through the settings, and I do not see anything for it.

I say "Ok, Google Now", and it works.

Exactly. My reference to OEM overlays was directed at the carrier variants. The only thing that I find better about the N5 is the upgraded processor. I'm a fan of Nexus devices in general and try to get every iteration of the Nexus smartphone (I skipped the N4, due to lack of LTE). In all honesty, I probably wouldn't have gotten the N5, but my wife needed a new phone and really like the S4. I used that fact as an excuse to get the N5.

I also had s4 GPE which I sold to get the Nexus 5. I really enjoyed the device till 4.3 borked the SD card. I rooted and fixed it but it make me worry about the future of the SD card with pure Google. I did not want to have to fix with every update and the 16 GB of internal storage was not enough for me but I can make the 32 GB Nexus 5 work.

I'm still on the fence, I've grown to like the N5 but the speaker and just some of the other little things bug me....I miss the Samsung ringtone/SMS sounds, the LED indicator working flawlessly, etc. Nothing huge but silly little things.

We'll see, gonna give it a few more days then sell one of them.

I am sure you can get the SMS/Ringtone samples and manually install them. I've already done this with my own MP3s without rooting.

I actually love the Nexus LED...it is very slick. It's the best one I have seen on any phone so far. On the speaker...there is nothing you can do for that. I have seen some videos showing how to hack it to make it better, but I don't think there is a lot you can do for it.

I think the Nexus 5 makes a fine secondary device. ...a nice change of pace. However, after owning one, I realized I would never be satisfied with it as my only driver. That feeling is the fault of the exceedingly powerful G2, which to me, is the superior device.

My S4 is up for sale, liking the Nexus 5. A few features that I missed on the S4 I was able to do with apps.
