Considering getting a maxx hd, but...

So, I currently have an incredible 2. I love the ability to hold the "search" button (in the bar with back, home, and menu) to access voice command where I can set alarms, internet search, and find directions. I will be changing my plan soon, and with that, I can change phones as well. I love the long battery life of the maxx HD, but I noticed that there are only 3 buttons (back, home, and apps?). Is there any way to get different permanent buttons? Would I be able to do this if I rooted the maxx? I tried to search, but I don't know what to call those buttons.

Thanks!

The user interface is totally different. You don't want Froyo buttons on a Jellybean phone.

There's now a bar on the top of the screen. Tap it and you can do all those voice commands and many, many more. Say "United 17" and it will tell you its currrent ETA, knowing what airports are near you. If you're using a European recipe, "how many cups are 1.2 liters" will tell you. Both of these tell you the answer verbally. You won't miss the search button.

btw, there are no hard ("permanent") buttons to take screen real estate when you're watching a movie, for instance. They're all soft and change as needed.

Oh, woah! Thats awesome! I'm kinda looking forward to it now haha. I have one last quick question. I did a little bit of reading, and it seems like some people are having some issues with the camera. Is it a software or hardware issue? I have a different camera app, so if its a software issue, I should be okay, right?

Why would you get the MAXX HD now when the Ultra MAXX is going to be announced next week and released in August?

Since Google has an announcement *AND* Verizon has one next week. I would not buy anything until that is done.

The camera works fine, but it's nowhere as good as the Samsung G4's for instance. I would be amazed if the Ultra doesn't make a big improvement to the camera.

The screen will be 1080p, but on a phone-sized display that's probably not a big deal in the real world. But if you care at all about the camera, it's a major reason to wait.

It's a very good phone. But you should probably get the new version that's coming out in a month. Just wait a bit.

After 9 months, I still think the Maxx HD is a very good phone, and it has been durable. Never used a case with it, and it still looks pretty fresh. I'm frequently thankful for the battery life. But yeah, wait for the new one.

My dad has it and it us a pretty decent device. However its about to be replaced by the droid ultra. And seeing as how both will probably be 200$ to upgrade to at time of release, the choice should be obvious.

The ultra has better hardware, and software than the maxx HD. I would seriously recommend you wait for the ultra. Given Verizon's wide range of differing levels of support for their droid models.

What aspect of your plan will you be changing? Maybe the OP has grandfathered unlimited data and would be better off buying a used Razr Maxx HD off swappa so she/he can keep the plan?

You definitely can set a shortcut with the phones home button. Double tapping my home button launches the camera since there is no physical camera button. It could also be set to launch text messaging, open the phone dialer, etc from a list but not just whichever app you want.

Modifying the phones rom would enable you to change the Back, Home, Recents configuration to include a search button, that if you long press and hold could launch voice search. But its really not necessary. And since the latest update has pushed out, the ability to unlock and root the Droid Razr Maxx HD is no longer an option. Unless Dan comes back and figures it out, or someone else does, which who knows how long that will take.

If changing your calling plan isn't a big deal, you could hold off on upgrading just a little bit longer. The phone is almost a year old. Either way, the phone works great on stock firmware. I used to have a Galaxy Nexus and was constantly changing roms on it. For some reason, this phone just works.

So, if you were to have grandfathered unlimited data, and you may want to keep that, and if you also want to modify your phone, I would say buy a used one. If not, just wait for a new model.

Going from 4 to 3 buttons was really dumb on Googles part.

The 4 button layout was excellent.

There are a handful of new Motos coming out in the next couple months, one is sure to have a huge battery as well. I'd hold off on a MAXX purchase.

I can see the whole "Why buy now, the new one is coming out!" idea, but as I can get the Maxx HD through my enterprise for $49.99, does the new Maxx REALLY seem to be $250 better? I have looked it over, but I am not convinced that is the case. The only reason I am looking at a Maxx is for battery life. This device is my digital leash for work afterhours, and has to have battery to match. Also, I work underground, and have limited signal issues during the work day, which creates quite a drain in my Bionic that it has to be on a charger more times than not during the day.

I admit, i have been pretty out of the loop over the lsat year or more, so hopefully some of you could shed some light on this.
Based on this top-5 priority list, would you still say wait, or suggest a different device? (comparing price/performance)

1) battery life
2) phone signal
3) data
4) enterprise email support
5) leisure (games, web browsing, music in car)

Thanks in advance to anyone for your thoughts!

Since "camera" isn't on your top 5, I suspect you'd be happy with the MAXX HD. Of course, anything like a definitive answer will have to wait until the new phone is reviewed. It will have a full-HD screen, which probably means more theoretical than practical improvement in watching videos (these screens are way too small for 720p vs. 1080p to be a huge difference). It will probably have a faster processor, which could mean smoother operation, but many of us haven't been bothered by "lag" on this phone. (Some people have, but what they describe is so much worse than anything I've ever seen on either of our two MAXX HDs that it must be a software problem of some kind -- maybe an app with a memory leak.)

As to your top 5, I have no complaints. "Enterprise email support" is a complicated topic, but I know of no limitations that the new phones would remove. Good Technology is supported by Verizon for $15/month, and is used by many organizations for secure access to Outlook or Notes, but you need to ask corporate IT what your requirements are.

They've revealed now that the new one is going to be 720p like the current version. Seems as if the main advantages of the new one will be better form factor, (presumably) better camera, (presumably) less lag on the stock OS, version 4.2.2 of the OS (there are 4.2.2 roms for the current phone but they still have problems), a slightly bigger battery.

The RAZR MAXX HD is a solid phone with great battery life, so if you don't mind a phone that came out a year ago that's running 4.1.2 and you want to save money it's a good choice. Do be aware that it runs a little laggy. The battery life is everything it's reputed to be though - great on that front.

1. battery life - not a single complaint here, it is kind of like having a BlackBerry again. Yes, heavy, heavy use will kill it in a day but if you're a "normal" user, it will outlast any other phone on the market.
2. Phone signal - I think Motorola has the best antennas on the market. I've never had an issue and Verizon has great coverage in every area I have to be.
